I have a horse on loan, that originally was a 6month loan, then we agreed to another 2yrs (whilst owner was at Uni) and she has mentioned once or twice, that if i'd like to buy him, i can.
But i've never wanted to buy as a) I can't afford it b) he's 16 and c) I already have one horse of my own, however he is 13, LOU and light hack only. (i wanna jump etc) and i'm worried i'm gonna end up paying for a field full of oldies

She phoned out of the blue last night, saying she can't cope with having to budget for a horse that might come back to her, esp if I break him, and i could just have him, tack, rugs everything, for free!!!

through my surprise, i forgot to findout from her if she meant pernament loan or change the owner on his passport?

There seems to be a further complication re insurance (who gets the money if he dies??)

I also have no idea where my life is going .... i mean i have a good/steady job, as does my boyfriend whom i own a house etc with but i'm 28 and I don't know if I want kids and would i be able to afford 2 horses if/when i have kids?

Am i making this too complicated?

Wow lucky you!!!
Well do you REALLY want the horse forever? Because if you don't then I think it's best to tell her and tell her to sell him on if she doesn't want him either. Or give you his passport and then if you want to sell him in the future you can.
If you do want him then- bargain :-D I shouldn't worry too much about kids/etc just yet, figure out whether you actually want the horse first. And if you do and say in 3 years time you want kids and cant afford two horses you can always sell him on?

It would be best for you to buy him for a £1 and get a receipt etc so she can never come back saying she never meant for you to have him forever etc...in the future you could always loan/sell if need be.

This happened to me too with the same sort of circumstances. The owner was more worried the horse would come back than wanting it back!!
Luckily it was one of my best friends who gave me the horse and we didnt have any kind of contract etc. I had already kept the horse for several years as if it was my own and paid all its bills etc.
If it had not been from a close friend then I would have done what emilyw says - offer something like £1 so that money has actually changed hands and get a receipt. That way you have bought the horse and not been given it. You are then free to do as you wish with the horse.

if you do take him make sure you have a gifted letter signed by the owner of pay llike 50p or summit she is legally your's
