Perfect hh for your height & weight? I'm 5'4 8 1/2 stne and looking for a new horse! I've had a 13.3hh and a 16.1hh, but neither felt right tbh!! How do I knw what suits for this time!!? Anyone else ever feel like a pea on a drum or over horsed??

(According to my measuring stick) I'm about 5'6" and I weight around 10st, my biggest is a 17.1hh Duch WB (middle pic in my sig) and I feel massive on him!

I'm 5'8" and weight 9 1/2 stone (on a good day!) and will happily ride anything between 14 hands and 17.2 I find I can get away with something small if it has enough of a front end to make me feel comfortable, at the same time I've been on a 16 hand horse that was very weedy with no front end and felt too big on it!

Im 5'8" and weigh 9.5 st I always look big on anything under 16hh but I do prefer smaller horses.. We have a 17.1hh homebred mare but I just don't like them big!

Yeah see originally I thought I would go for another 16hh something but I'm having thoughts now that maybe a 14.2 - 15.2 would be better!

I think the best thing you can do is try a load out and see how you feel

Its not just hh but build as well. I'm 5'10 and 10stone. I sometimes look big on my 16'3 but look right on my wifes 14.1 welshie. However I do look really funny on daughters 13hh skinny section B

i'm 5'5 and weigh 8.5 stone i have a 14.2hh that i felt a bit big on, i also have a 15.1hh and i feel just right on her although the people at my yard say i look quite small on her ! I personally would never have anything over 15.2hh as i have no arm strength due to 2 broken wrists so i can only have a lightweight smallish horse.

Like someone said its build aswell as height, Lance is only 16.2hh but because he is so well built with a big neck etc he feels much more of a substantial ride than Beau who is 17.3hh, Im 5ft 5 and 8 stones.

I'm 5'5, no idea what I weigh but am a size 12, and I am happiest on my 15hh arab

but he is in an XW saddle. I think my ideal height would be about 15.2hh. I think ona really pony-ish or very narrow 15hh I wouldn't be as comfortable but J rides much bigger than he is. Rode my friend's 16.1hh WBxTB yesterday and she felt tall and very very narrow - used to a round shoulder in front of me!

Agree it's about build as well. I'm 5'8'' and about 11 and a half stone and I've ridden a multitude of different shapes and sizes. I've ridden 13.1hh fell ponies and Icelandics and felt fine as they were really broad and also carried themselves really well and had a nice big front end. At the other end of the scale I've ridden a 16.1hh anglo-arab who was built like a radiator with no withers and I felt huge and really top heavy and overbalanced. Definitely need to try a few to find out what suits!

I don't think it's so much about height & weight as rider ability & horses temperament.
My boy is 16.2hh and a substantial MW, I'm 5'3" and weigh about 10st and I'm perfectly fine on him as I find him easy, he has a nice sensible temperament and I don't feel over horsed. Our 14.1hh Welsh x TB however is a different kettle of fish entirely! He's sharp, spooky & incredibly sensitive so he can feel too much when he has it on him!

I'm 5ft 5 and weigh, ahem 11stone and George is 16.3, I went out to buy something smaller, but to be honest I'm glad I didn't as he is chunky-ish and I feel safe having lots to grab hold of! My only bug bear is getting on as I'm not as flexible as I once was!

I'm 5ft6 and I feel my mare at 15.1 (and a bit)hh fits me perfectly. I also ride a 16hh cob which I find too big and a 14.2 section D which I also feel is a good size.

Nicola, I am almost exactly the same height and weight as you. I don't have a horse at the moment, but my last one was a big German showjumper who still, at just over 16.1 (165cm?) was really way too much for me to ride... I love big horses though, but even the narrower ones above 16.3 or so, becsome difficult to reach round when you have short little legs! And then your position/seat starts suffering... :-( I would love to suit a 17hh warmblood! You long-legged people don't know how lucky you are :-)

(But it is of course much more down to you and the horse together, rather than any physical restrictions.)

Im 5ft6 and my main two lads are both 16hh, I need a lot in top for my coloured because he pulls like a train, but need a lot more leg with the bay because he is a lazy sod, so 16hh seems about right for me. I ride a lot of different ones, biggest being an ID who is 17.1hh, I am constantly toppling off because there isnt enough leg keeping me in the saddle!

I'm 5ft and well, while i don't discuss weight, my condition score is about 4.5 (i.e. I'm a blob) ! I ride a 16.2hh TBxID mare and while she probably is far too big for me, I feel safe and comfortable on her. I definitely don't feel over-horsed in anyway, though obviously I am not as effective as i could be if i was taller or had longer legs.

I rode a 14hh cob at a riding school recently and HATED riding her (and that was BEFORE she bucked me off...). There just wasn't anything in front of me, and she was so wide that I found her quite uncomfortable for my little legs. The only good thing was that it wasn't far to fall.

I am 5`4" and at the moment I have to ride my daughter`s 13.2hh or my husbands 16.2hh, until I can find something for me. I am hoping to find something around 14.2 - 15.2hh, only been looking for nearly six months now!
