My manchester terrier is a perfect lap dog - she adores cuddling up on my lap on the sofa and really snuggles up! Unfortunately she is getting near the end of her days

I'm not trying to anticipate her leaving us but I want to be prepared as we have another dog who would not cope on her own. I would be looking to get another dog medium sized or smaller with short hair that doesn't malt much or slobber, preferably with silky rather than coarse hair, that will be really person-orientated and love cuddles (exercise is not a problem as we live on a farm!). Any ideas of breeds would be great! Many thanks

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel - regretably I have to admit they fit all your requirements (I hate them as mum and sister breed them... you CAN have too much of a 'good' thing

)

My wheaten loves nothing more than cuddles and belly rubs. No malting or slobbering and his coat is just like cotton wool (feels like it). LOVES people...all the time, absolute joy to have around!

Thanks for the ideas and I am interested to hear those breeds don't actually malt but I am looking for more of a smooth short coat like a greyhounds... gorgeous dogs tho!

Lovely little dogs, not too 'delicate' whatever people think, and easy to have around

Have to say however that my lurcher and greyhound - both with short smooth coats - moult just as much as any other breed, it is pouring out of both of them ATM

My lab thinks she's a lap dog, sits on any knee given half chance. She also likes laying on the back of the chair with he head on your shoulder. Her view is if the cats can do it so can she.

Whippet(a dinky one)
Italian Greyhound
Chihuahua
Dachshund

Non/minimal shedding..but not smooth
Poodle
Bichon frise
Yorki
Shih-Tzu
Lhasa-apso
Maltese...there is a few more

Another vote for whippets - they have beautiful short silky coats and are very loving and affectionate.

Boston Terrier

They are affectionate with everybody and everything--the perfect combo of athleticism and couch potato. (If not, pugs are brilliant lapdogs, and I second the Italian greyhound vote.)

Done some research on whippets and italian greyhounds and they look and sound perfect!

Marie_L - your lab looks adorable, I wish my lab was cuddly but she can't stay still for a second!

prose - I love the pics! Will look into pugs too as I think they're really cute, are they soft?

Yes, their fur is soft, though they do shed quite a bit (the black ones less so than the fawn ones). I still think you should get a Boston, though

My Lab also thinks she is a lapdog. Here she is squashed onto my OH's lap.

My older lab does exactly the same to me! Which would be fine except she is HUGE! At least yours is a little dinky one

My Dobie also likes to sit on your lap for a cuddle, however as she weighs 5 1/2 stone I wouldn't recommend it!

We were at a BBQ the other evening (dogs invited) and she walked up to a complete stranger and tried to climb on his lap! He looked rather concerned!

How funny! Sounds so cute.

Like the sound of a whippet as a substitute hot water bottle - exactly what I like in the winter to keep me warm!

How about one of these?

These are pups at the farm where I keep my daughter's pony. Mum is a long-haired minature dachshund and dad is a JRT/Chihuahua mix!

My friend is having the black puppy who appears to be long haired. The darker red pup is a girl and also will be long-haired. The blue one is being kept by the owner and the other 3 fawns are all boys - only one left now and ready on 31 May.

They are adorable. She had 4 pups last year and they have turned out to be such lovely dogs - great temperaments.

I would LOVE to have one but I have 2 large dogs already and really don't want 3 in the house however small!

Whippets, mine loves to cuddle and at every opportunity will curl up on my knee, dive into my bed and loves being picked up and carried, she is a real sweetie.

They are patterdale terriers!

Ours are course haired but you can get smooth haired versions!!
We've got 3 and they are the most affectionate cuddly terriers ever. They are full of energy but just love cuddles too.
Occasionaly they get a treat of coming up to bed with us and they just love curling up on the duvet and don't move all night!!

A word of warning about the Italian Greyhounds - do your reasearch very carefully... they are gorgeous little dogs but very fragile and their bones do break easily

They are also much more 'active' than whippets or greyhounds which are pretty lazy dogs once they've had a 15min run around. IGs will keep going and going... if you get one make sure you get the 'tougher' lines (I think it is the show lines that are very delicate).

I've got two whippets, they are soppy lap dogs given half the chance but also devoted killing machines as soon as the front door opens. they love being picked up, snuggled and generally treated like babies.

One word of warning though that both mine are devils for running off as I live on a farm and they can go for hours. I live in terror that they might get in with someone's sheep or something and these days I make sure one of them is tied up in the tack room (they take turns) as they will only run off as a pair.

SouthWestWhippet - really good advice thank you, really appreciate it and very interesting, had no idea italian greyhounds had so much more energy, think a whippet would be a better bet on that front. Thank u!

Hi Hollyhorse. I know this thread is quite old so wondered what breed of dog you ended up going for?

We have two Italian Greyhounds and they are fab. Yes they are very active, but not all the time. They love nothing more than snuggling up with people - preferably under a blanket or inside your jumper!!
