Grace has been lame for just over a week, but the last few nights she has ridden sound (I have been told to ride her by the vets). It is believed that she had a bruised sole which was causing the lameness, but when the vet came out to check her he also felt some tension and sore spots in her back near to her spine.

When the physio came out this morning she started treating her and confirmed that the main areas of discomfort were quite far back and predominantly on the left hand side (the side she was lame on!)

She said one of her vertebraes in the lumbar area was quite stuck and required manipulation and that there were some other areas which needed treatment (I cannot remember all the ones she named...)

However, she does not think that the issues that arose in her back were causing the lameness. She said they would create discomfort under the saddle, but not unlevel strides when trotted up on a hard surface.

Grace was most lame last Thursday, and has gradually improved to the point where the vet could barely notice it when he came out again on Tuesday. He said it was very slight and could still be the bruised sole healing but wanted to rule out her back before anything else.

She has to have three days off work (including today) and then be ridden in walk and trot on Monday to see whether she feel right. If she does, then she has to be brought straight back into work again (please keep your fingers crossed) but if she is still feeling slightly unlevel then the vet will be coming back out on Tuesday and we will look further into what could be causing it. She has already had flexion tests on both back legs which showed nothing at all (I was so relieved) and she seems to be trotting up sound to me.

It is quite hard because when you have had some lameness, I think you look so hard for it that you almost imagine it is still there... does anyone else do this?

I know what you mean about imagining its there, ive done that quite a few times.

At least the physio has treated her so you now know its not her back thats giving her problems.

Got my fingers crossed for monday for you both - make sure you post to let us know how she is getting on x

Thanks P_G... will do!

Going to trot her up tonight as instructed and I should be able to see if there is anything suspicious going on under there. Last night I managed to walk her for 30 minutes in the school (a great achievement) but to keep her occupied I did lots of lateral work and she was back to finding it all extremely easy whereas the other day I felt she was so sticky and was fighting me all of the way.

At one point she wouldn't stop trying to show me that she could almost piaffe, so I started to teach her travers and she picked it up incredibly quickly! At least it kept her mind on something other than bouncing around

Hmmm, I have to say she lost me along the way. I think, from what she said and my own experience of back problems (:o) is that the vertebrae in question was not moving as it should. For example, when the horse bends correctly to the inside say, its whole spine should also curve, not just its neck. Basically, this one vertebrae has no flexibility and was therefore not allowing her to bend around the leg as it was uncomfortable. This, in turn, was affecting the muscles directly in contact with the vertebrae as it would in a human.

It IS really easy to become obsessed with lameness and almost fanatical about feeling things that arent there. I tend to do it more when im on board than I do when im on the ground.

Anyone you know who can give you a reliable second opinion?

I hope shes all fixed now

Thanks for that. Sorry was just curious. I do hope you manage to get to the bottom of what is not right with her, it's worse not knowing what to do for the best. Fingers crossed and good vibes being sent your way for a speedy recovery.

Thanks... I tried to explain it as best as I could as not 100% sure myself. I think it is more the side to side movement in a horse rather than like ours which goes side to side and can also arch etc etc (please don't quote me, I could be completely off the mark

Tierra... I am going to ask someone to look at her while I am riding I think and if there is any uncertainty the vet is coming back out to our yard on tuesday to see another horse, so will get him to have another look at her.

I am rubbish when it comes to lameness... I become absolutely obsessed and see things that are no longer there. However, when things are there I can't see them
