Things are a bit tight and I'm fed up of rowing about money so I'm thinking about selling up although nothing has been decided yet.

I've tried looking on websites to see what horses like Daisy are going for but there just aren't any for sale. People hang on to horses like her.

Your honest thoughts on her value gratefully appreciated.

15.1hh mw piebald mare. 13yo. Genuine allrounder who loves to jump. Most enjoys hunting, xc and SJing but would be just as content in a hacking home. Safe, confidence giving ride who never gets strong or silly. Will hack alone or in company without naughtiness. Will live in or out, fine with mares and geldings. Excellent to clip, shoe, vet, dentist and load.

Would suit a mother daughter share or someone looking for a horse to teach their OH to ride on. Suitable for anyone from a confident novice to a more experienced rider looking for an uncomplicated ride to have fun on.

This really isn't an advert so no nasty replies please. I just don't know what her value would be and I don't want to make the heartbreaking decision if she isn't worth much anyway.

I have no idea what she is worth in this climate I'm afraid, but just wanted to pass on my best wishes as it must be a very tough decision

Could you consider loaning her out in the short term (which will reduce your costs immediately) and sell her in the spring when prices will increase??

I would say about £3/£3.5k ishhh. she sounds very genuine but she isnt particularly young.. but sounds like she would make someone a smashing family horse
smile.gif

Good safe hacks who will do a bit more are worth their weight in gold. I know someone who sold an utterly talentless but safe as houses hack for 5K, so I would think you are looking in that ball-park TBH.

Sorry to hear that, hard decision for you. You must do the right thing by yourself and her whatever you decide...

If you do decide to sell her, I may be interested. My boy who I bought as my main ride has OCD at the age of 6 and although I thought I would never be able to afford another on livery (I have a mare as well) we have had a bit of a change in circumstances and may be moving to a new house with our own land. In which case I will be looking for something I can ride; hacks on Dartmoor, SJ, bit of XC and some local level competing as well as teach my OH on- safe and confidence giving but not ploddy. I need something that can carry his weight (he is just average build but quite tall at 6"1') but I dont like riding anything over 16.2 as I have short legs!!

I have no idea on her value I am afraid though

Could you find someone to share her with you? I know you hear horror stories but it must work with the right person? If I had the money I would love something like her for my other half, my horses take the pee out of him as they are too big. I'm sure if you waited a couple of months you would be able to sell her if you really needed to.
What sort of livery is she on, could you make a few cutbacks there? Do you have any tack you don't use or rugs you could sell to tide you over till summer?? She soulds lovely and if you can manage to keep her by cutting back a bit things may be better later in the year?xx

A lovely cob like her as said will be worth her weight in gold really.
Not sure of exact figures but maybe around £4k

Sorry to hear that this is something you are having to consider.
Are there are other possibilities you would consider such as loaning or working livery or moving to a cheap yard?

My friend is selling a very similar mare in the mids, same colour and 11yrs old i think. Shes done more showing than SJing though

Shes struggling to get over £3k for her at the minute, I suggested waiting a bit, shes been offered 2-2.5 which I feel is low. Is sharing or loaning a possibility

ETA if you did decide to loan Im looking for something for my OH to ride, but Im probably being a bit cheeky there.

agree with john robert. dont sell get rid of the other half!!!? can you tighten your belts a bit more til spring comes? if you do have to sell you will optimise the sale come april/may! no one is buying at moment (or not round here!) best of luck, but think carefully you wouldnt replace a saint in a hurry and will pay a premium, even if you sell in a good market! there are ways and means to lead a skin flint life and still keep ponio!

What about a loan to the RDA ? for a short time or possibly one of the local colleges (Rodbaston) - we are all struggling financially what with the current weather and using a billion bales of hay and straw, and state of the economy is not the best to be getting a job, asking for a pay rise etc.

Can you not put her in grass livery for a year just so you can keep her? She sounds priceleess and i really really feel for you.

Oh hun. Hugs to you.

I know the thoughts will have been going round and round in your head. As others have said, is loaning her out an option?

I wish I could have her. I bet Daughter2 would be happy riding her, but I have no chance of another until I find somewhere/something re. Little Lad.

As to value, then I'd pitch at around the £4k mark if you need a quick sale.

I'm sorry you are having to consider selling.

This sort of horse is in great demand. You'll get 3.5K tomorrow without blinking.
Marketed right, and if you are prepared to wait for the right buyer to come along I think you should see 4.5K on the assumption she is completely sound and lives up to your description.

I agree with a lot of people on here she is worth her weight in gold. Just so you know i sold my 15yo cob like her to a hacking home, he had a heart murmer (as well as being older), and went for £4000 (had higher offers - didnt like the homes
tongue.gif
!). So she has got to be worth at least £5000 if she is as you say and will pass a 5 stage vetting
smile.gif

So sorry your thinking of having sell her. She is really lovely but I suspect you know that already
grin.gif

Unfortunately with the climate being what it is what a horse is worth and what you could get for her are very different things
frown.gif
If you were able to hold on a bit longer try and do so. If things pick up I'm sure you'd get a lot more than what you may be offered just now which would at least be a bit of a consolation.

have to say - I'd be ditching the OH before thinking of moving her on. I'd lay odd's she a finer example of the species than he is

As others have already suggested about loaning her instead of actually selling - but obviously if you need that capital or just to save monthly outgoings? - I would definitely consider it. I think whoever suggested loaning to an RDA is an excellent one - there are two round here with amazing facilities and the horses are kept beautifully.

I had unforeseen drastic changes in circumstances recently and my first thought was that I wouldn't be able to keep the horses but actually, things often have a funny way of coming right in the end - if you can buy some time before you make your final decision, there might be light at the end of the tunnel.

Unfortunately I can't actually answer your original question as I have no idea what she is worth in the open market - but I do feel for you. xx

I'm also on a budget with my boy, i'm a student and whilst my mum has always been happy to help out whenever 'family animals' are concerned i try not to take the mickey of her generosity.
I'm 17 and still live at home so i don't have to consider rent or any bills really so it's just Ronnie i concentrate on as well as looking after my own expenses.

I keep him on grass livery for £30 a week, our in effect YO does feeds in the morning and haylage throughout the day and checks up on them every time she goes out. My £30 includes all feed, haylage and YO's time.
Admittedly we don't have a stable or anything its very very basic but for on a budget i really cannot complain at all, i really love it up there on a small private yard.
My only other expenses are farrier bills and vets fees apart from the £30.

I don't know how much cheaper that is than what your paying but i would def. suggest grass livery. It might not be ideal for your needs but if you can cover that and it means keeping your mare i would look into it.

I hope everything works out for you, i'm really sorry to hear your in this awful situation

I'm going to hijack this post, sorry! I'm currently looking for a horse like this for a client, in fact, JUST like this one! And as this one isn't def. for sale yet, has anyone else got one? Age up to about 14/15, 15.1hh - 15.3hh for first horse for sweet but leggy 13 yr old girl, to do PC, local shows and hunt. To stay at livery with us! Good budget, prefer to include tack and rugs, long term home! I've been looking for about 2 months now! Prefer someone with a history and who will like being spoilt!

oh I love her, she is what I probably should have bought, instead of a 16.3 5 yr old TBX.......anyhoo
Price wise, I would have said around 3.5k, only because of her age, time of yr and current horse climate. If she was a few yrs younger I would have said 5k easily - But I could be completely wrong of course. As others have said, horses like her are in great demand and worth their weight in gold so you may well get nearer the 5k mark if you decide to sell.

Thanks for all the replies.

I have thought about a sharer but if you'd seen the succession of nutters, wierdos and complete novices that have replied to other adverts for sharers on our yard I'm not going down that route.

I wouldn't loan her out for fear that I send out a good horse with some value, they don't respect her and then send back a broken horse with no real value.

Working livery not an option as of the two RS near here one only takes geldings and the other doesn't care for its horses properly.

Please I am not critising your OH at all- but have you spoken to him and told him how hard selling would be?

When i took redundancy from a high flying career - i was worried sick about supporting my horses in the event of a huge vets bill or if i was out of work for too long....

I spoke to my OH about selling Mr Schoolmaster - as no one would want the old girl and he was fantastic - he said he would not let either of them go (i only had 2 at the time to worry about) until all the fun cars, motorbikes etc had gone and he would take a night job if necessary to help out. I was lucky though and within a week had a part time job, and within a month i had a full time job - which i love and pays enough to keep the 3 horses i have now AND gives me more time with them than i could ever have dreamed of.

Try M&S, they often want someone to work weird shifts ie sat, sun, early mornings, late nights.

Good luck - you have enough determination to get through this and if i am frank if i had sell my horse to save my relationship - I would probably end up beng so resentful of my scarifice it would be the end of the partnership.

Seriously have a heart to heart - he may be horrified that you are thinking of selling up.

Good luck

Actually I wouldnt give up on the sharer but dont ask for novice riders and also, when you are talking to them, say that in order to check both are OK, they have to have a lesson with your trainer/knowledgeable friend, YO... my friend did that as she has a lovely 15 year old but while he is real all rounder and has turned his hoof to most things he is not a novice ride - also she took on 3 people rather than put him on loan to one person. This has worked really well and she is really wary about who works with him.

But as the others say it comes down to if you are trying to reduce monthly costs or need a lump sum. Horrible position to be in (have been there) had the most bitter rows over my horses but always much worst when the relationship was coming to an end (not suggesting this of you) but I can really relate to the alwful guilt trip and nagging.

Can you find a cheaper livery, there are some bargain places out there if you can find them. One place I kept seren at short term was grass livery only, but it was £7 a week!! And thats in an area where you average weekly livery is £25-£35. If I had to move her back there I would just to keep her. Is this something you could go on a mission looking for?

There are some great places to loan that will look after your girl. I loaned seren out to a University for 2years and they looked after her impeccably. Can you look at Universities or similar further from your area?

She sounds wonderful! I think you should consider loaning her out rather than selling too! She sounds too good to just let go of. You may never find one similar again. If you loan out long term then i'm guessing you wont have any bills to pay. Or very little.

Have to say after being a student at two different equine colleges, I really wouldnt advise anyone to loan their horse to a college. I've seen many horses ruined. Riders of all different standards will sit on her, she'll have a busy hectic life with probably a lack of turnout.

I hope you can find a better situation and dont have to sell.

ETA: Just read your last response. I'm sure most loans dont end up with a broken horse. Just vet the prospective loaner very well to make sure it is a good, honest home. I'm sure you'd easily find a happy hacker type home for her.
