Pony had an accident Under 2 months ago in the outdoor school and crashed into the school mirrors. Touch and go many stitches here are the progress pictures up to this week. Shows you how the body can heal:) lucky lucky ponio. In picture 4 the pale bit is his near side jugular, 1mm closer it would have had a different outcome.

Anyone who faints i am not picking you up!!!

The pony will always have to have wet hay and mushy feed, no treats unless mushy as he will be prone to choke. Must say this pony surpassed himself with behaviour and calmness and only did not like the thermometer nothing else.

Holy good god I was not expecting that!!!!!!

Glad it has healed so beautifully what amazing vets you must have and star of a horse. Jesus. I wanted mirrors but maybe I'll review that lol

Sheer accident they have been replaced now, he was loose schooled by owner and I just think ponio forgot they were mirrors. Owner learnt a valuable lesson on that day, I never realized horses have 2 jugulars. He just cantered across the middle of the school and turned too late and caught the mirror on a angle on the beam behind. Had he gone straight into it the damage would have been minimal but the part of the mirror he hit stayed jagged and that is what he hit. The rest of the mirror caved in and stayed just cracked but the edge on the beam supported by the beam was the area that could not cave in due to the wood.

That doe not really make it clear as hard to explain

OMG that's unbelievable, never seen anything like that before. Amazing recovery. Poor pony but glad he's recovering so well.

Good grief, poor ponio looks like he came into contact with an axe wielding murderer. That is one very, very lucky pony. His owner must have been horrified. And isn't it just typical of an equine, behaving calmly throughout his ordeal but for the thermometer! :)

Just a thought, if the pony had cut its jugular and it was visible, would pinching/holding it together help stop the bleeding until the vet arrived? or would it be a certainty that pony's time would be up?

Mother of God that poor pony! But what a recovery, testament to the vets and the carers. I must be naive, I always assumed that the mirrors used in schooling areas and stables wasn't actually glass. Now I know different. Will he be able for all his usual activities when fully recovered?

Crikey - that's a corker of a wound!
Just a caution - I had a little mare who sustained a very similar wound when she was hit by a car. It also healed up beautifully, but a few months after it had completely healed, she got sarcoids all along the scar. Apparently it's quite a common reponse to a major wound like that. Keep an eye on it!

Thanx for that

Not sure what work he will go on as she was looking for a sharer before this as he had to retire from driving

the thermometer up his bum he had a spaz at and twisting round so vet could not insert it but the vet inserting cloths on the wound on the days that followed he was more chilled, go figure lol

Not sure, the day it happened we went through 3 towels to stop bleeding, owner walked the pony from the school to my house across the yard and left a trail of blood. She went to hosing area while I called vet. There was claret everywhere all across the yard and spilling out through the towels. It was one scary day ..... just checked the day of accident 10th August when it happened

Jesus that's some accident :(

Amazing result though.

We have a sloppy feed pony too (after a choke op) so always here is you need feeding suggestions. ..

OMG 😲 That's an absolute corker!! What a fantastic recovery!

The mirror doesn't look like it could have done that much damage either, that's terrifying! We have mirrors going up in our arena in the next few months, I think I'll be showing the YO these pictures and asking them to have a no loose schooling rule! Or have the mirrors put in behind the fence line so they can't be got at at all!

Wowzers! Lucky pony! It doesn't look like too bad a wound when it is stitched, you would never believe the before pictures were the same thing!

Its amazing how much blood a horse has in its body. You may think they have lost a lot but it's not actually that much to them. I've stood holding a horse who was bleeding out - straight out of the heart from the chest cavity ...

They are amzingly resilient creatures!
