What are peoples thoughts (if any) on the PRE horses? Just wonder how popular they are becoming and whether people would use them as stallions to produce dressage horses.... i.e would mare owners cross non PRE mares onto them to give them a foal with dressage capabilities?

Have seen a few now coming through at International Grand Prix level. As an example.....this gorgeous lad stands in America and is trained in high level dressage...

Would not say "no" to him myself!!

I love Andalusians. They're my favourite breed in the world
laugh.gif
I've never owned one but i dont think i'd cross one wth my warmbloods, i'd rather have a pure bred myself. Having said that, i've only ever seen a TB x Andalusian, none of which i was impressed by....perhaps a warmblood x would look different?

Are you thinking of going down that route Anastasia?

Theres a TB mare on our yard in foal to an Andalucain. I have to say though, the only Andalucian I have met (the sire of the unborn foal is on our yard at the moment) has absolutly horrendous feet, I do believe he should be gelded rather than risk passing them on, and I have wondered what the Andalucian breed profile says about feet.

Of course, he is probably an exception, and I'd love to meet a good one at some point, but just my own experiance so far, which would make me more wary of checking things like that in future.

I think they're beautiful, I liked the idea of one before I bought my filly, a couple of things put me off, it seems that most of the competition ones are stallions, I wondered if the geldings would lack sparkle, it seems quite difficult to find a filly. Also the ones I've seen competing seem to get alot of comments about tightness (maybe thats just the individuals I've seen) but I've had an Arab mare for years and thats always been her problem so it put me off abit.

I would love to have a black one, for instance the stallions below are for sale...for a mere 60,000 - 150,000 euros

Granted the mane would be fun and games.....

but stunning animals....

I would love to have something to ride but everytime I buy a mare she goes in foal and I am not such a high standard of rider to do Vision justice. As a stud having a gelding is out of the question.

The one thing I love about the PRE are their amazing temperaments, trainability and easy riding. So I jokingly said to hubby on the phone at lunchtime that I have found the ideal solution - An Approved PRE stallion.....so I could ride it and it could be used as a breeding stallion for mare owners......
grin.gif
grin.gif
.....then I told him the price and he realised he was safe enough........LOL

But unless I come across a high 5-6 figure some of money its all a pipe dream...

My sister has been doing some digging on the ancestors of this breed which are also the ancestors of the American Appaloosa, she has been in contact with the breed historian, have a go at guessing what breed they actually descend from?

Some in America have the Spanish PRE breeders spitting fire as they are registering these AND Lusitanos on the same registry! A big no no this side of the pond! But there are some pure PRE breeders in the US that have some very nice animals indeed.

Have a few locally to me but one dishes horrendously and the knee action of some is quite high.

Loving the black boy in the 1st pics...as he's "only" 60,000 - 150,000 i think i'll take him AND the palomino...dont want him getting lonely lol
tongue.gif

It's a pity you can't have a gelding, just buy a really fugly mare that you wont want to breed from!! lol...ooooor why not ask hubby for a PRE colt or filly for Christmas, they are 'slightly' less expensive if you buy them as foals are they not? Just means you'll have to wait a wee bit longer to have something to ride though...and anyway i'm sure you're more than qualified to take Vision for a lively jaunt through that gorgeous Aberdeen countryside

I know that Silvia Loch has a few of them. Maybe find her contact information in this website and ask if she knows of any standing in the UK. She even has two geldings for sale on her website. I'm a big fan of her books and hope to meet her in person oneday.

I love them and sent my AngloArab mare to a gorgeous Andalusian stallion last year. He does dressage and has movement to die for, in fact, he has been the British PRE movement champion on two occasions.
This is the lovely boy (click on stallions and it's Romero): http://www.gazaro.co.uk/
Sadly she didn't get in foal but like lots of other mares she was having weird cycles. I had planned to send her back this year but I've now sold her.

I have no idea but I do know that it costs an absolute fortune to register a PRE foal (about £500 I believe) but it has something to do with the registrations being done in Spain. To register a part-bred, like mine would have been, is something like £135 too, again it's because they get Spanish registration papers. All the info is on the BAPSH site.

We had a PRE mare in for breaking. Very easy mare to do, she was cantering with in 3 weeks of me sitting on her and had a nice little pop.
The only thing I don't like about them is their feet, they do seem quite boxy but this mare sold for a lot of money for breeding so they obviously don't mind their feet.

As a breed, they are fascintating.

They are very different to warmbloods and many people cant ride them properly, especially if they are used to warmbloods. We have 2 at home and theyre fab characters.

For me though, the lusitano is a better sports cross. They tend to be a bit taller and I prefer their stamp. We have a luso stallion and my trainer has a grand prix luso stallion who may be standing at stud next year. Several crosses are eventing sucessfully.

I have ridden a few iberian horses (on holiday in Spain) and seen ones stabled at livery alongside my horse. For me I did not like their paces compared to the warmblood. It was like riding a very small, short striding pony with no suspension. The do collect and sit very well though, it was their working, medium and extended paces I did not like. HOWEVER - the ones I rode were not necessarily top quality and were more of the old fashoned type. I believe they are breeding a more modern type which is a lot more athletic. Temprement wise I could not fault them. An iberian stallion in general behaves like a gelding - they are a different world away from how a warmblood stallion is to handle or ride. Anastacia -this may be your solution as you would easily find an iberian stallion suitable as your own ridng horse. I have heard it is a lot cheaper to get a Lustiano from Portugal and I wonder if you are in touch with the same agent a friend was a few years back as the horses were stunningly beautiful but extortionate. What about getting in touch with one of the breeders in the UK or the UK breed soc? They would be able to advise on where you could locate a nice young stallion - perhaps direct from the stud as even a 4 year old stallion would have a good enough temprement for you to ride and enjoy. A livery I knew brought one home from Portugal adn he was very nice and very cheap, though I couldn't say if he was approved fo breeding.

Re the tightness though the back - this months BD mag has an article on it which is interesting. Feetwise - I think the standard of shoeing is not so good abroad as some of the pics of the horses I have seen have had feet very, very long feet so I am sure this is something a good UK farrier could help. Lastly (!) when I saw a performance by the school of equestrian art in Jerez (Spanish RC equiv) there were a few andulsusian x TB's (I think called cowboy horses) and these were very athletic, nice horses - a lot longer in the back so more of a warmblood mould- so perhaps an Iberian stallion could attract some nice TB or warmblood mares as well as purebreds if you stood him at stud.

Have a look a here - horses for sale - but under horses not eliet horses. Approved stallions, look nice enough and well schooled but a fraction of the price of the others you have been looking at. They wouldn't be world beaters but looks like they would make nice all round riding horses

You must have ridden bad ones.

Good ones have far more natural suspension and cadence in the pace when produced correctly than the warmblood. They have a much more natural collecting hindleg but it's a myth that the extension is poor because again, a well trained iberian will produce a very technically correct extension.

The issue comes in because Iberians are much less forgiving than a warmblood- a warmblood is about setting the biomechanics right and the rest tends to fall into place. With an iberian is much more of a head game and you cannot just bump the warmblood biomechanics into them anad expect them to cover the ground with big warmbloody paces.

Oooh and the issue of iberian vs warmblood stallions. Trust me, there are some hot iberian lines and these stallions are not easy! Our luso stallion is straighhtforward because he was handled correctly in Portugal but he can be a total nightmare when his hormones engage before brain!

I did mention that I did not think the ones I rode were top quality!!!! Of course with every breed you will get differing bloodlines and temprements but on most forums what people look for are generalisations and peoples experences. These were my observations and experences, nothing more nothing less.

We will have to agree to disagree with this Bossanova. Even in Jerez where I would presume the school of equestrian art is capable of breeding top quality horses and training them properly, the pure breds did not have good extensions compared to warmbloods.

Any stallion will need careful selection, but I would be surprised that it is a myth that iberian stallions in general have good temprements and are easy to train and handle as you seem to suggest. You obviously have a lot more experience than me but I know many people that are delighted with their Iberians temprement. Anastacia that posed this thread is very experienced and has her own stallions and would be aware that no stallion should be treated as casually as if he were a gelding, but I do think for what she says she would like, an Iberian stalion would be more suitable than a warmblood stallion. I am a fan of the friends iberian horses that I have ridden - but I would not buy one as I do prefer warmbloods. We do not all have the same tastes! Which is just as well I think
