In brief I'fve been looking for a quiet hack for myself - no competing or jumping, just a bit of a pet who likes to mooch. I've been astounded at the cost of such a ned, today looked at very suitable ex hunter, recommended by a friend, swwet bit boy - 19 years old and sound. The price tag - £3950 'because he's safe'... I was a bit shocked but is this the norm? I know that horsea are going on for longer than they used to but the seller thought that he had a 'couple of good years' in him.

I thinkthat it has been too long since I bought a horse...... gimme the zimmer frame!

That sounds a lot for something that age... Try speaking to the Veteran Horse Society - my mum's friend got an old plod from them and he's lovely

Join the club! I am in shock everytime i open the For Sale page in a horse mag! I cannot believe the price people pay for old horses now! I went to look at a 17 year old that was £3000 because it was a friends' and I thought she might want a genuinely GOOD home and waiver the price tag! Stupid of me!
People are only out for what they can get with selling horses! Money comes first over anything now.
Gone are the days of just giving horses to good homes and people you know. I cant believe how much ponies cost too! I mean you grow out of them so quick.

Dont even go and view these sort of priced horses because it encourages the sellers!!!

I think it's expensive given the horses age, for a younger horse that is what price a nice safe hack is fetching.

That seems like a lot of money for a horse of that age, no matter how safe it is supposed to be!

I am still searching for a safe happy hacker, and you are right, the prices people are asking are unbelievable, and often, the horses are not as safe and bombproof as you are led to believe!

Also worth adding, age doesn't seem to have much effect on horses becoming "safe".

I find they either are or are not safe from a young age and this doesn't tend to change!

To the OP.
Once he is recovered from his current injury (suspensory ligament) I am looking to loan out my horse as a happy hack only. He is a 16.2hh 12yr chestnut gelding - laidback, really loves an amble in the countryside.... PM me if you might be interested

Ditto. Some horses just have old heads on their shoulders and are safe and sane no matter how young they are. Looking at current horse prices, I can't understand them - there are some that seem incredibly cheap and some that are horrendously expensive. Just pleased that I'm not looking.

Try to look for safe horses of any age! my 16yo is pretty safe particulary in the school but can be spooky out. My friends 7yo is completely bombproof and often comes out with me to keep mine sane!

Quite agree, unfortunately it would seem that some seller want to get back the original purchase price of the horse - I don't think that they necessarily have the horse's welfare at heart either. Hand over the cash and the horse is yours, several times sellers have made no enquiries as to my experience or ability to keep a horse!
