So the puppy will be 11 weeks old on Thursday. He sleeps in a crate next to my bed.

So last night, he woke me at 11pm, 1am and 3am....

He doesn't squark or kick off, just whimpers softly, but as I am a light sleeper it wakes me up. Took him to the toilet each time, no fuss or fun, toilet then straight back to bed.

Now I am confident that he doesn't actually really need the toilet each time, when I open his crate he just lays there looking at me. I think he is getting cold overnight as the heating goes off overnight.

So last night, I gave in and let him in the bed at 3am. He woke briefly at 5am with a few puppy wiggles but slept through until 7am.

He's a whippet, so it was inevitable really wasn't it.

Oh dear. Yes it was! Mine is now 5 months old and sleeping through downstairs. Well until 6.30 which is fine. I just don’t want him in the bed or bedroom for that matter so I touched it out!

he’s reliable in that he’s never chewed anything he shouldn’t so he now how the run of the living room anc died is happily on the sofa.

puppies eh? Such fun! Oh. And where’s the picture?!

With my first I tried very hard to get him to sleep in his own bed. After about 6months I gave up. With the second one he went straight in the bed.

Its just what they are programmed to do. I made sure he was crate trained as a puppy as I think they should always know how to be settled in one, but other than that hes been in my bed. Theres nothing I like more than a sleepy whippet cuddled into the small of my back. Its like a real life hot water bottle.

Well it doesn't has to be inevitable, our whippet has always slept downstairs in her crate overnight (although did have another dog for company in the early days). So if you don't want them in your bed, you don't have to do it. But if you are happy to have your whippet in bed with you every night, then that is fine too. Just make sure you have considered the 'cons' too. The main one is that if you have to leave your dog with someone else for any reason, not everyone is happy with a dog in their bed! And there is the consideration of whether you are likely to have any human bed partners in the future!

Our last whippet slept in the bed and the intention was that this one would eventually....

I wanted him to crate nicely so always start with a crate as I think it helps prevent separation anxiety, however he is super independent anyway and will happily play by himself in a room while I go upstairs or whatever so I don't think that will be an issue with him anyway.

I don't go away and leave the dogs with anyone as I have no life so no concern there ;)

I only lasted two nights before Daisy was in the bed with me. I wouldn’t have it any other way, especially when she crawls under the covers with me.

Having said all that, she’s only little so theoretically doesn’t take up much space. However once she’s warmed up she stretches out and kicks me until I move over ???

We did it with my bil’s puppy when we looked after him for his first 2 weeks, but as always have 2, it would’ve too crazy! The pile on is inevitable, my two are currently on my OH’s knee, default is on someone’s knee.

Just to update, we went to bed with him in the bed at 8.30pm. A toilet break at 1am. Slept in until 5am. Toilet break at 5am.

I thought that would be my lot and that there would be no way he would settle back down to sleep after sleeping soundly for 8.5 hours......but he slept until gone 7am ??

It was wonderful. I feel like a whole new woman this morning.

If you think he’s cold and would prefer not have a dog in bed you could try a snuggle safe heat pad? They are pretty good. Cecil my little dog had one as a baby but he’s hard as nails now ?
Alternatively keep cuddling him in bed, that would be my idea of absolute heaven but OH would have a fit at the idea!
