One of those rides today that was unsatisfying. My mare is quirky and needs to be negotiated with. Despite being 16 and being an all round amazing horse - if she gets the s****s it’s all over.
I just wanted to do some flat work in the jumping paddock, some nice balanced cantering with the occasional pop over the jumps that were set at a tiny 60cm. Nothing to get excited about.
Apparently it was exciting and she leaned all over my hands, locked onto every single fence even though I just wanted to go past them. I got determined, then she got determined and then it was all over. Both of us annoyed with one another - complete lack of harmony.
Came inside to get sympathy from husband, who trained her into the fabulous horse she is. He said:
Did you ride canter shoulder in to lighten her? No
Did you do lots of transitions? No
Did you change direction frequently? No
So you just banged around in circles pulling her when she pulled you? I guess so.
I know the answer is obvious, quirky horses require intelligent riding, which today I didn’t display.
Tell me about your quirky ones and what intelligent riding skills you engage to get the best out of them.
