"The racehorse weave"??

Hey everyone,

I'm just wondering if any of your ex racers have the "racehorse weave"?
I've had my mare for a week and a half now and she hasn't done it for ages, then today I came up and she got all excited and started "nodding" constantly. We have a retired old ex racer as well and he sometimes does it but very rarely.

Maisie hasn't done it as much as she used to in her old home but she used to do it when she was in a stable, we don't have stables but she's doing really well living out actully she has even started putting on a bit of weight.

I'm just wondering if Anyones horse stopped weaving over x amount of time and what you all done to try stop it? She is happy as pie, a bit bored as the wind and rain and can be a bit grumpy when it is really windy. I have come up every day to see if we can start lunging but it's been to windy and she's not keen on the wind when she's not sheltered. Any advice?when I come up I groom and play little games with her in the field like "follow the leader haha and getting her to back up when I ask etc" I have also given her a Bordem breaker but she hasn't Sussed it yet but this is only when I'm grooming) she hasn't been introduced with the other horses as yet but they run along the sides of the field together etc as they are all very close.

Also when I turn her out with the others for the first time would you suggest putting tendon boots or anything on? She has over reaches on now to protect her more.

Mine does this!!

He's always done it but has gradually got better.

Tends to happen more when he's bored but he often does it for no apparent reason.

None of my others have picked up on it though.
 
My ex-racer has a "reverse" weave. When he is getting himself settled in his stable for a little sleep, he starts weaving his back end - usually bumping one side on the wall. When he has got that going, he starts to nod his head as well - a bit like patting your stomach and rubbing your head at the same time, I suppose. And he does this just before he falls asleep!
 
I would definatly put any boots on her so long as they dont rub :)

I have put but boots on the welsh x because shes such a clumsy nut :D
 
Mine doesn't weave, but used to crib bite and wind suck when I got him in April. He only did it when stabled, but stopped totally after about 10 days - 2 weeks and I haven't seen him do it since :D He came to me straight off the track and was so stressed out and institutionalised, I seriously think he'd forgotten how to be a normal horse.

My boy also didn't suss out his decahedron ball for ages, but now he can empty it in about 5 seconds flat! He wouldn't eat apples, carrots or other treats and hated being groomed or fussed with a passion. He now actively looks for treats! He still isn't keen on being groomed, but no longer tries to kick me :)

I think they just take time to chill out and re-adjust to a normal happy horsey life.

My mare knows how to eat carrots, but not apples lol its quite funny trying to teach her while the apple juice is being squished in my hands (Eek) She also doesnt mind being groomed, but she doesnt like me smuthering her and kissing her face (who would haha) So im not smuthering her anymore, only grooming but she does like me to tickle behind her ears etc :) She has been grumpy over the couple of days putting her ears back as shes moody from the wind etc lol, but since the wind has gone down shes okay now (touch wood)

I have a couple of horse which do it, one of them being an ex racehorse and one still racing. i mostly think they do it out of bordom but also eagerness to do something. i tend to find when they are less fit, they seem to do it less.
