The rescue I got my dog from said Drontal is useless

or words to that effect - and that Milbemax is the wormer to use. The dog has passed a roundworm (thin, white, thread-like thing) this morning so what should I do? She was supposed to be up to date with her fleas and wormers; I have flea-treated her last week because she was scratching.

Have rung the vet who says it's non-urgent as the dog is otherwise OK and is on the list for checkup and worming when they come tomorrow to vaccinate my horses.

I never had a worm problem with my last dog, who was wormed sporadically with Drontal. She rarely, if ever, had fleas either???!???
 
Well I am no expert and have not heard of the one you say. Have tried others though and swear by Drontal. It may not be the be all and end all of wormers but it has worked for me for the last 8 years :) See what your vet says :)
 
I think milbemax covers lung worm as well. I have always used Drontal and never had a problem, I suppose it could be that worms are becoming resistant to it. The only thing I have read is that milbemax contains ivermectin and is not advisable for collies or collie x.

My vet says Drontal works well but does not cover lung worm.In his practice [in Surrey]lungworm is becoming more common.My farrier lost his terrier to lungworm last year so I have decide to use Milbemax even though it is more expensive than Drontal.
 
I use Avocate (POM) on my dogs which covers all worms except tape, fleas and (the real reason I use it) earmites. Stronghold is similar but I have a feeling that it doesn't deal with lungworm. I drontal annually to make sure tapeworm are got rid of!

Lungworm is a real problem in some areas so I'm glad that that is also covered. I've never used milbemax but isn't that prescription only too so also requires vet consultations which start to make it very expensive.
 
Hi I've swopped to milbemax as it treats lung and heart worm plus it's a 'treat' dose rather than a tablet down the throat jobby! I don't think there is any problem with drontal it's just medicine being improved and milbemax covers more worms.
 
So is there anything non-prescription that is effective and covers everything? We used Drontal and the boys still seemed to be dragging bums on floor after the two doses we gave them so far.:confused:
 
The vets I work at recommend drontal but then again lung worm isn't a big problem in our area.

Dragging bums can be a sign that the lovely job of emptying anal glands needs done!
 
If your dog came from a rescue then chances are she has been re infested before she came to you. The fleas and the worms go hand in hand and if they were not treated together then that could be the problem, rather than the wormer, I have used Drontal for several years and had no issues of early re infestation. Just make sure that the dog is treated for both worms and fleas at the same time and it should stop the cycle.
 
Good point bennett i was told by my vet to frontline once a month and treat the house till the fleas had gone but that was a few years ago
Bum scooting sounds like anal glands which usually gives off a fishy smell from behind. As this should be cleared naturally by the dog toileting I would check they do hard poohs if not adjusting the diet should help. I would also go to the vets for them to be checked and expressed the first time to check everythings ok and show you how to do it (not the best job but best to do it right) if you don't want to do it most groomers will offer the service alot cheaper than the vet.
 
question - I worm mine and my sister dog with Drontal every 3 months (as per the instructions) and advocat for lungworm - so should I be using the other one (can't spell it) that was mentioned? Vet never suggested it and seemed happy for me to use both drugs.

I know we have lungworm in Surrey - my sisters previous staffie boy had it - he recovered from lungworm but very sadly, the bloods and tests showed he had a defective heart and they lost their staffie boy when he was only 4. RIP Alfie.

I like and I dont find it anymore expensive than drontal, but i would think cheaper than having to do two different doses. I always used to use Drontal with no problems but when something better comes along....

ours is by panacur i think??? i dunno we get a big tump tablets in a bag to do all ours, which reminds me, we are due soon...

Anal glands...mmmmm... pair of gloves and do it in the shower, locate them at each sidfe of the anus, they feel like little balls, get your fingers behind them and sueeze them slowly and gently, pushing toward the anus, you may think squeezing hard will do it faster but they wont empty it will just be uber painful for your dog.

The problem with vets recommending things is each vet is different, has different endorsments and opinions. My old vet was a legend, quite a famous one who is very feildsports orientated and down to earth-no fluffy bunnies policy, the vet i had back home was a complete bunnyhugger and their variations were worlds apart.
 
Being a breeder I like my dogs to be "well wormed".We have a litre container of Panacur ,cattle strength which is 10%. Work out the dosage by weight ,which means VERY little is needed per dog,and we dose three consequetive days to deal with everything including lungworm etc.It is cheaper and effective for me,Drontal became less effective of late and this is a more cost effective convenient way..just a tiny amount on the dog`s food,easy :D As for fleas..no we don`t have those,but if we did I would use Frontline Duo or Promeris spot ons.Incidentally the Dermoline Insecticidal horse shampoo is an excellent dog wash/flea killer.Lovely scent too!:)
