I did this last night, as my water buckets were freezing solid overnight.
I can't figure out why it works, but it appears that it does. Bottles were 1/3 salt,1/3 water and 1/3 air

Ok i tried this and it failed, so did a friend. How much salt are you putting in and how much water? Should the bottle float? (so not a full bottle of water?) Im confused .....

Salt water freezes at a much lower temperature so the bottles won't freeze and will keep the water moving as salt water's heavy so the bottles will move, I guess??
I need to try this though, plainly!

If t was that simple, there would just be a hole in the ice around the bottle though - this is why I'm a bit flummoxed! There was a light coating of ice, which you can hear in the video - but none of the rock hard thick stuff that I had to deal with yesterday!

Anything put vin the bucket will help it not to freeze our water tanks are not frozen even though its been -10 overnight . We just have a log floating in each.

Hmmm yes that makes sense.
However, why the bottle works does not make sense....
Magic? Lol.
Though hey, if it works, I'm not complaining - I was jumping up and down on the ice in the buckets yesterday to no avail! Will give it a try tonight and report back ;)

I put warm water in some old plastic bottles (that we usually use to carry water for the dogs at events :) ) in the horses buckets yesterday and they have kept them ice free at the top. Mind you the stables seem warmer today and the buckets aren't as cold all together.

I did this for the first time last night but didn’t know there were specific quantities! I filled the bottle to the top, poured in around a tablespoon of salt and it worked! The tub with the bottle was a little slushy but not frozen, the tubs without were frozen solid.

Right so i need to stick my hand in a freezing cold trough to retrieve said bottle and empty some water out of it to make it float .. Im on it :)

It was oh so slightly warmer this morning tho, my flexible trugs in field shelter yesterday took a while to bash as were solid.
Filled fresh last night and only a light ice this morning, same with stable trugs which have been solid last 2 days and this morning all had only a little bit of ice on edges.

I thought I'd give this a try, and was amazed that if seems to work. I used large milk cartons half full with a good amount if salt.
