linali - I know that many people cite this reason, and in many cases it is because there is an issue to be solved. However, I have come across it (not often enough for it to be quantifiable evidence), and in these few cases it has been a total mystery. Mare is generally previously an easy breeder, has been swabbed clean, no fluid issues, cycling normally, stallion is fertile, timing is perfect. The following year, she will be straight in foal.
I think as a phenomenon it does exist, but don't be fobbed off with it - most of the time there is a valid, factual reason a mare is not in foal.
