I have had one shetland/welsh cross and we now have a second one that is a retired riding school pony (she originally came from a trekking center in Wales and ended up in a riding school near Paris before being retired to us). Both would suit what you are looking for. I would say don't get too hung up on breed, a nice temperament is more important (particularly a companion who doesn't mind being left behind on his own).
Both are/were about 11ish hh.
You could aslo get a NF from the sales, they seem like nice ponies.
