Any suggestions I have a TB type who is 14 yrs owned just 18 months. Feet were not in great condition on arrival. Have improved but he looses shoes on regular basis especially when out at competitions (Polocrosse) diet is selected to promote good foot health, he has also tyed up twice last winter and after reading up recently possible PSSM. Have now taken shoes off and taken out of competition for rest of season as hoof wall so weak it has become more difficult to keep a shoe on. Foot also has barely no growth which is a struggle. I want to play him again next year. Would generally play with shoes on but not against trying without just want the best for my boy. Shoes came off last week currently a little foot sore but nothing major. Any ideas much appreciated

my barefoot PSSM horse (who also tied up) has amazingly strong, fast growing feet. His diet is grass/soaked hay, copra, soaked alfalfa pellets, micronised linseed, salt, bicarb of soda, equimins metabalance (or advanced concentrate) magox and for the PSSM alcar. This is the best diet I have found for him and I feed the same (minus alcar) to all my barefoot horses.

If his shoes have just come off get a sanding block (or raps) and keep the edges running round smoothly to avoid cracking and breaking of the wall as the nail holes come down.

Raise this on Phoenix Horse Forum and the folksk there will give you good advice

Mileage is good as long as he can copw wiht it - keep the back of the foot clean and deal with any thrush - add a good broad spectrum mineral and vit supplement into his feed (like Pro Earth or ForagePlus) and you'll be fine.

Be patient, if he has had shoes on for a long time, there will be changes in the shape of his feet.
