The title of your post 'skinny horse from dealer' made me wonder why most of the skinny horses (and by skinny, I mean really, really thin) often came from private ownership - from people who kept horses on about a 1/4 acre of grass - I recall one particular lovely colured horse who was almost an RSPCA case, from a 'loving' family, who had half starved the animal because they knew no better........
Your post title just helps to purpetrate a myth.....I would have called myself a 'dealer' some 10 years ago - but the horses / ponies I offered for sale were at the peak of health. Many of the horses / ponies I purchased from private owners (so called animal lovers were not) My son bought a very poor pony a few months ago from a 'private' person who just collected horses. It was in a very poor state. We wormed him, gelded him, and turned him out on some decent grass - it took less than 3 months to get him looking half decent, just a huge change in regime - oh and we fed him! Rant over, but these posts make me MAD!!

Yes your horse looks OK in the photos - but to be fair I am struggling to see the before and after.......

welldressed ijust put that because she was bought from a dealer and she was skinny, she was also traumatised along with other health problems...teeth back etc....no offence intented but i think shes come a long way and so does my vet.....anyhow im more interested in peoples opinions on her breeding as i have no idea on this.....and if you can see no difference between my buying her and now i suggest you get urself off to specsavers for a check up !! x

oh and forgot to add dressed this horse came from a well nown bad dealer from bishop auckland county durham....who is renouned for selling cuckoo horses underweight and dehydrated......and has been done for that already.....i guess i hit lucky....shes neither dangerous nor cuckoo.

Y'know I wouldn't say ID cross at all, except for the relatively long back she doesn't look much like one. I'd be more inclined to say Dutch or even Gelderlander possibly?

No idea on confirmation but she is looking lots better :) She looks similar to my share mare who is ISH so maybe shes a TBx ISH??
Hope you continue to have lots of fun with her :)

Point well made - I have just gone back and have had another look -(with my bi-focals on ) and the week one photo was a bit grim! Well done on getting the weight on......but my post was more about tarring all dealers with the same brush! Breeding - could be anything....probably a half bred mare that had broken down that was let loose with a TB colt (cheap stallion) ....Which means that your horse may end up lovely, and hopefully will not have any of the inherited traits that the mare had, because (she broke down, or had personality traits that were not paletable, will show themselves in your youngster) ......we sold a horse last year that was TB X Dartmoor and the owners who purchased it last year at a Pony Sale came back to same sale this year to track us down to tell us how lovely the horse had turned out.....we bought it as a 'traumatised yearling' handled it a bit - had it back a year later to sell - had it gelded, started it off, and then sold when it was 3 years. Now 4 and the new owners love it to bits......He is called Tod, and they have done masses of natural horsemanship with it - which I am not convinced it needed as conventional breaking would have been OK - but thay have enjoyed the experience and Tod has a happy home - so good result! Having gone to town on the dealer thing - there is a bit of a rant happening here now about indescrimate breeding.......but some of the best horse have been raised the wrong side of the bed sheets - so nothing wrong with that per se......but if breeding is unknown, I wonder why??

well she is down on passport as being ish....sire is saracon hill......dressed look him up he sired glenhill gold so doubt he was just a colt running in her field lol, i think maybe you just want an argument cos u were once a dealer well unfortunately for every good one theres a bad one and the one she came from certainly didnt feed her up or look after her, i just dont know her dam, although sire is approved so would her dam have to be approved? im nt sure how this all works tbh, anyway i just cant work out her mums side so any opinions very much appreciated.

and just to say i couldnt get a farrier to touch her without sedation....now she will happily stand and have anything done.

Dressed i also am in touch with the guy who broke her and he said she was always a well adjusted horse...nt nervous a great hunter etc, very bold....funny once shed been thru a dealers hands she bacame a nitemare...but hey maybe ur rite all dealers r great it must have the ferry over from ireland that did it.

I think she looks better in the later pics, just a bit lean in the first one. She hasn't a lot of heart room, so will struggle to look 'deeper' in front. I'm pleased she has found you as you obviously care greatly for her. I think she looks very contented - keep hold of her.

Brave of you to buy from such a disreputable dealer:eek: and very lucky for your mare! She looks heaps better now (I've got my glasses on!) and I'm sure will look even better when she's had more of your TLC. Hope you have fun with your SJing and XC. and put more photos on later when she's back in work. How old is she btw?

the better pix were she has weight on looks like exactly like a friend of mines horse which is tbx id same colour and everything lovely horse as well dont know proportions of breeding or weather half and half but is very much like for like

I too bought from this dealer a few years ago. The horse in question was far to much for me. (no guessing why) . So well done you for seeing it though, you have a done a terrific job and hope you have a lot of fun together.

i am no great horsewoman but i do like the look of your mare and can see she is benefitting from your care. i was interested in your post as i too purchased from the same source last year. my horse was also traumatised by something and it took a long time to work through his issues. All i wanted was an older horse who was suitable for hacking as i have wanted one for 30 years. we dont know his history because of his dubious passport. however i wanted a horse just to hack out on and through a great deal of luck i have eventually got that.if your mare is like my boy then through time she will reward you tenfold... good luck

If she is by sacran hill she will have a hell of a jump!!

And if you look up ni horse board you will see a pic of him jumping :)

also glenhill gold is no colt running in the field - he is an advanced 3* eventing stallion!

But well done on changing your mares life around :)

I thought you said in a previous post that you had managed to get in touch with her breeder - surely he is the best person to tell you what breed the dam was!

what a beautiful reply! Wish I was more like you BE.

Hi ty for comments, i am in touch with previous owners i thought they bred her but they bought her as a 4 year old unbroken and they broke her but they dont know who her dam is either, do you think its poss the irish horse board will have some info on her breeding?? just a thought. It just says she is an ish

Yes after hearing some of the stories after i bought her i guess i hit lucky !!

Its not a major issue it would just be nice to know what breed she is!!
