Blackpool's working horses may have to wear 'nappies'

BLACKPOOL'S landau horse drivers may be forced to fit nappies to their horses if councillors vote to bring in new rules.

If the plans; under discussion on Thursday; are approved, the 44 landaus licensed to work on the Promenade, will have to attach a dung-catching device to the carriage during the peak holiday season.


Members of the Landau Owners Association are opposed to the plan, saying the bags would be dangerous and uncomfortable for the horses.


The British Driving Society has also written to the council, saying: "Nappies are extremely detrimental to the welfare and safety of all harness horses."

The horse drawn carriages in Prague are fitted with these dung catchers...which don't seem to be emptied every time the horse poos/wees.....with the result that the smell is terrible....

With all the pollution caused by industry and traffic they are worrying about a small amount of horse poo on the roads? Have these people got nothing to do? It's ridiculous! Why are the people in charge of this country so annoyingly stupid? They should concentrate on litter and pollution and things that actually cause a problem!

How can anyone even notice horse poo in Blackpool? Its one of the filthiest, nastiest places I've ever been to. Horse poo on the roads would be an improvement over the piles of vomit and kebab wrappers.

They have horse drawn carriages in Bruges too and they have the scoop behind them. Personally I would rather see horsecr*p on the road than chip shop rubbish and broken bottles. There was a time when most deliveries were made by horse and cart. The old boys would be waiting with buckets and shovels for the horse to "deposit" I know because my Dad told me.

The also use them in switzerland - have done since I was little (many years ago) - emptied regularly, horses not bothered by them and no smell at all

i feel that if there are regulations brought in about this,it wont be long before thay say certain roads can only be used by horses wearing nappies and they after a while it will be everywhere.
