hello, ok can anyone give me an idiots guide to this triangle thing so i can practise? Will the judge tell me what to do in the ring or do i need to be telepathic? - I don't want to look like a div. The ones I have seen on you tube they walk a smaller triangle and then trot a larger one. And do you really have to keep trotting round the corners of the triangle as they look quite acute angles? thanks, plus any other advice greatfully received, esp about how to get horse to stand up/still.
Oh, and also I heard someone say about using an extra rein on the outside bit ring to keep pony straight which seemed a good idea - what do you think?
thanks all!
ps if anyone wants to post pics of their yearlings being shown that would be lovely!

I've only done the triangle thing once, it was a long time ago though! As far as I can remember you walk round then trot round, I got a bit ran off with while we were trotting and had to circle him around the top of the triangle which cost me a lot of marks. The girl that won it trotted her horse really slowly so she could turn him around the top of the triangle. Then she let him trot out a bit along the next side.

Hope this helps, hopefully there will be people in front of you that you can watch.

Triangle thing is all done on the right rein for starters

Same size triangle for both the walk and trot. When you're trotting they do like you to keep going round the corners but they're only there as a guide so don't have to turn quite so sharp, take a wide berth!
With regards to standing, practice and praise!!

When you go in you will probably walk/trot straight away then stand at the end in the middle of the triangle- hope that helps!

one thing to note is that it is all done on the right rein, this means you have to turn your horse the more tricky way. Probably you choose to always turn your horse left when coming in from the field and doing general handling as it is easier that way. therefore it is definitely worth practising turning right at every opportunity you can get, even it it means doing 270 degrees!

It you do your 'triangle' about 3 or so metres out from the poles, then the potentially really sharp turn at the corners is actually about a third of a fairly large cirlce to much easier for you to run round your horse in trot and means your youngster will not lose balance on the turn as much.

alos, sometimes they mark the triangle with poles, sometimes they just mark the corners with cones or tubs of flowers. it is worth practising with both so you can judge when to turn, and also so your horse doesn't freak at the flowers - lots in the yearling class at the B&W last year did!

bye!

thanks everyone that's really helpful - I will go away and practise! I hadn't even thought about stuff like what rein it would be on etc.
I hope I get a not too scary judge!
