the verdict is.....................

[ QUOTE ]
I HATE the people who think that only top level animals should be bread from? What about happy hackers/rc people? They couldn't afford to buy the arko's that didn't turn out the way the breeding suggests!

Absolutely their is a market for everyone and when you see the quality of cross breds in the UK that are ideal for the amateur then I don't think we are doing too badly!

The wonderful characters and temperament of the Irish drafts, the cobs our natives and our ponies they all have such an important place in todays market.

But and there is always one isn't there, people do need to identify what they are aiming to breed and I think that is where we loose ground in the UK. As too many people choose a phenomenal stallion that competes at the highest of levels expecting to produce the next world class athlete using any mare without consideration to the bloodlines and the ancestry of the mare.

Conformation, conformation, conformation regardless of breed/type has to be the most important factor along with temperament.. quality of limb and strength of the back are all so important regardless of what we are breeding and sadly I feel there are just way to many horses that find themselves into amateur homes with serious conformation faults that eventually lead to the horses breaking down and no longer fit for purpose and I find that really sad.

These horses are sold cheaply but often end up costing more in the long run to maintain.

thanks navelgem and opie.

the problem with bracken is she has slightly 'bandy' back legs!!
blush.gif
this is not genetic but due to an accident she had years ago in which a cart went into the back of her.
mad.gif
i checked with the vet when i got her its not genetic at all in fact last foalie had lovely straight legs!!
grin.gif
other than that her conformation is fine and as for strength well she can still jump bloody high even with her bandy legs!!!!!
grin.gif
no thickening of the tendons or anything!!
grin.gif
they just look a bit odd!!!
blush.gif
her temprement is also very sweet once she gets to know you as she is weary of strangers at first, she was badly headshy when i got her and now she will let me mess with her head!!
grin.gif
it takes a little time to get her trust but when she trusts you, you can do pretty much anything you want with her and she will just let you!!
grin.gif
. in the real world i had someone frown up on the thought that i was going to breed from bracken because of her legs and lack of pedigree!
mad.gif
however when they themselves ended up with an uncontrolable, nasty and bad conformation of a beast of a foal i will admit to being a bit smug as her 'perfect' horse had not lived up to her expectations!!!
blush.gif
grin.gif
like i said to her it dont matter if the mare is a top horse if its passed on bad temprement and faults no-one is gonna want it!!
grin.gif
shes stuck with the foal now, she only wanted to breed to sell the foal on!!!
shocked.gif
i'm gonna be keeping the foal for myself and if its only half as sweet tempered and quick at learning as the last one then i will be a very happy bunny!!
grin.gif
sorry for the long post!!!!

Sorry to hijack your post, but that foal in Springfall stud's avatar catches my eye every time.. Super foal!
Sorry to hear no foal, I really wouldn't blame the stud the awful weather has played havoc with mare's fertility this year, I know of several top studs who have had lousy records despite regular scanning.
We have had a late August foal once before but wouldn't really recommend it, best stop and try again next year as the foal is always that bit behind it's companions..

awwwwww...........i really wanted her to be in foal!!
frown.gif
Mines due for her scan on Sept 1st
crazy.gif
. We still got two more tries after that. I'm not bothered about having a late foal, because we're gonna leave her empty then. If you want to keep trying, go for it. We're still trying, against all advice
crazy.gif
. It's a learning experience anyway
grin.gif
.

thankies henreyhorn and aimeelou!
grin.gif
nope dont blame the stud do think this weather is messing with all the mares!!
mad.gif
bracken has only had 2 natural seasons this year!!
blush.gif
i'm pushing my luck with the time scales but should if caught be end of july/start of august she would be due!!
grin.gif
luckily the yard i'm on the owners have had foals before that have been late so they will help if need be!
grin.gif

shocked.gif
