the verdict.....

some of you may have read my last post about my vet suggesting xrays as he suspected my mare had athritis...

she had her xrays yesterday and infact she has an old pastern joint fracture which never got treated, so to compensate has lots of irregular boney growth on and around the joint.

thankfully shes not in much pain at all with it, just uncomfortable.


short term my vet said to give her a couple of years off and think about maybe putting her in foal as she gets so bored of standing about in the field.

long term its unlikely that she'll be ridden again as its so far gone. im not as bothered as i thought i would be (or maybe it just hasnt sunk in yet?) about not being able to ride her. im just so glad she can stay with me


waiting to hear from Newmarket before i think about putting her in foal as want to do everything i can for Ria first.

That is a shame, but at least you have an answer and some kind of picture of the outlook. She is lucky to have a loving home with you and i'm sure things will work out for you.

i feel quite bad for not finding it sooner
it just so happened that we looked at everything else before we did her leg.

glad the search is over now and can start working towards making her feel more comfortable.

I am going to ask in a nice way before anyone else comes in....if she is uncomfortable now, how will she be carrying the extra weight of a foal around?

its when riding that she's uncomfortable but shes fine in the field, as you can see xD hahaa
i would never put her in foal if it was going to cause more discomfort than it normally would, im going to speak to the vet again once Newmarket have replied before i jump into it.

That's good. You are obviously a very caring owner

Are they hoping it's going to fuse? Hence the couple of years.

It's so hard with mechanical lameness isn't it Makes you feel really bad although the horse can be pretty happy!

ive spoken with my vet and he said he's looked at the xrays again and cant see why carrying a foal would do any more harm.


searching for the perfect stallion is proving just as difficult as it is searching for the perfect man hahaha

What a shame she won't be ridden, she looks absolutely lovely, but like others have said it's great that you will be keeping her.
