The weather is changing :(
The evenings/ mornings are really quite cold, I've had to rug at night..eww
And all the horses are starting to hang around the gate at about 6/7pm...
I just thought I would depress everyone there :P

Fingers crossed for a warm September

I have been bringing my 2 in at night, weather is just a bit rough. For my area the weather cast is for a cold week this coming week then back to warm summer weather. I don't like the heat but then not keen on mucking out 2 everyday either!!! There's no pleasing some people!!!

It's a bit chilly but I wouldn't say cold just yet, just gets a bit nippy so you need a jumper it's nothing bad though?

It's still 16 here, my horse wouldn't see a rug untill it was quite under 10 degrees..

Totally agree! I've been poo picking at 9pm in shorts and t shirts but rode yesterday, turned said horse back out and it was dark by 8pm! Did i mention I had a huge jumper on too? It was so chilly last night! Winter is on the way :(

I'm sure no horses are going to disintegrate with a temp drop of a few degrees. Can't believe how quick people are to rug their horses as soon as it's not 20 degrees...

The excited feeling in my tummy is well alive since it's got colder! Autumn and winter are my favourite seasons though hoping we have a cold one this year instead of the truly awfulness of last years never ending rain. I don't tend to ride in the summer so really looking forward to getting back in the saddle again :D

Goodness, where are you all - it's still t-shirt weather here even though a bit cooler.

After weeks of doing the horsey equivalent of lolling on the beach moaning about the heat and wanting to do nothing more strenuous than wander across for a drink, my natives are back to lively, cheeky form now it's cooled down.

To whoever said your so quick to rug your horses up..

I rugged my shivering 27yo in the bitter wind while it was storming.. I think that is pretty justified. ;)

I've just looked at the long range forecast from day 6-15 (from now) and will be interchangeable weather, sunny at times but with long spells of wet weather also.

This is the met office forecast

UK Outlook for Friday 22 Aug 2014 to Sunday 31 Aug 2014:

Cloud and showery rain in central and eastern areas will gradually clear away on Friday. Otherwise, sunny spells and showers, these heavy in places; especially in the north. The showers should become mostly confined to northern and eastern areas on Saturday with southern and western areas probably turning mostly dry. However, rain is likely to spread in from the west later in the weekend. After a cool start with some chilly nights in the north, temperatures should return to near normal by Sunday. Probably remaining unsettled into the following week with further showers or rain for many. The best of the drier, brighter, and subsequently warmer, conditions are likely to be in the south and southeast. Temperatures near average, but feeling cool at times in the rain and brisk winds.

Old, ill and very thin are a different matter. Healthy young horses should not need rugs in average temperatures in Britain.

Yes, it is dark by 9.30pm now, the rains are falling and the winds blowing, and my cardigans/ponchos/winter coats are peeking out of the cupboards. Some are even being worn. I do miss the hot sunny days already. Guess I must unearth the horse rugs soon.

This! Its August for pete's sake! How on earth is the horse supposed to grow a proper coat, like its endocrine system is designed to do if its already being smothered in august! Never mind not being able to absorb vitamin D etc correctly. Ergh I despair.

I've just spent the weekend at a show in the Cotswolds on the top of a hill. It was extremely windy and I was in a t-shirt, fleece and my winter jacket and I was still cold! All the horses had rugs on for the night and I felt guilty I only had my thinnest no fill rug for my horse.

Before owning Jay I would have agreed with Moomin, but heck, he has been cold. When he is cold he is sharp, reactive and gets upset.

He is now in a lightweight wind proof in the day and a 100g at night. Very thin quilt.

One thing I love about having my own horse, I get to decide how best to keep him, not that I would ever criticise how other people keep theirs (welfare issues excepted).

I'm not sure how putting a no fill rain sheet when it's raining is 'smothering a horse'.....ditto a thin cooler at night when it's 11 or so.... Horses for courses as long as it isn't a welfare issue.

Its freezing her now too, its been a brilliant hot summer for us and its now changed so quick! One of my horses is in the stable right now, I had to bring her in an hour ago to dry off as she was just about to start shivering so need to go out in a bit to rug her up and turf her back out (well open the door, she can stay in if she wants). Its blowing a gale with horizontal rain right now :( I'm wondering how I'm going to keep my horse going through the winter with no school (and we now live on top of a hill where it's very windy and can get very snowy). Next door has just finished a brand new school so I'm hoping to get to know her asap!!

I think for me it feels chilly because its gone from 30 day time and 20 overnight, to 13/14 and 9 overnight in a matter of a couple of weeks.
I'm not complaining though, my poor old boy was melting ..he doesn't deal well with heat at his age!!

I've been doing 5am starts at work and I've realised how chilly it is in the morning! My boy is in a thin rug at night now and he's had it on a few times in the day when it's been chilly and windy/raining.

I am loving it and so are the horses - no flies, softer ground and no sweating or sun burn. I am never sad to see summer go as don't do heat!

However it is only mid aug so imagine this is just a blip....

This is the problem. A lot of horses really are unable to regulate their own temperatures these days, then they shiver in temps of 13 degrees, and the owner automatically then rugs up...and the cycle continues.

My 4 yr old has had a light rug on the past 2 nights. It's been much cooler, windy and rainy. I don't mind healthy horses a bit cold or a bit wet but not both.

Many horses don't get to regulate their body temperature in winter either. They react by growing a thicker coat, which owners then have clipped and then they're rugged to whatever temperature owner deems acceptable.

Its not so much the temperatures its the rain! My welsh a has dropped a ridiculous amount of weight for this time of year and is really feeling the cold. She's having a blood test this morning to rule out anything underlying but is currently rugged up if its chilly/raining during the day and wearing her fleece at night. I cant let her lose anymore weight before the winter! Normally wouldn't rug this time of year but had to make an exception. Id imagine people walking through the footpath have alot to say about it but i couldn't care less, rug for the individual horses needs not the temps!
