Todays Question................

I heard on the radio this morning that Sunday night the winds are coming, "its expected to be worse than the winds in 1987" which i dont remember as I was only 5!! Apparently my town, Basingstoke are currently on an Amber weather warning for these winds!!

My horses are currently out 24/7 with a nice big field shelter but I think I'd be really worried about them being in the field!! (what if they get swept off their feet and taken to find the wizard of oz?) I Don't have any trees in my field and its about 3 acres! it has hedges around 2 sides but just in front of my field are loads of massive oak trees, so if they came down they would destroy the front fence!! and the little bungalow that is also on the end of my field!

So do I risk bring them in? (then I think, what if the stables don't hold out and come crashing down) unlikely they will come crashing down, they are massive concrete things that would have with stood the winds of 1987, they are pretty old but strong!

Either way I think I'm going to worry about the horses!!

What would you all do? Am I over thinking this?

Mines in a fairly small field so cant go too crazy and gallop about, he has one tree that I'm hoping holds out but I'm leaving him out. eeeeeeeeeeeeek!!! :-/

I can promise you this....I wont sleep a wink and for once it will not be the fault of my 8month old devil child ;) good luck with it :)

I personally prefer them out whe strong winds . roofs are more likely to be pulled off walls blown downetc in wind then horse getting injured in field by trees or flying debris plus the noise would be greater if in :)

I also prefer out around firework night as the thought of stray rocket landing in stable/hay makes me shudder and noise is same really in or out and Baby was fine with noise. always have an image of her standing watching going "oh ah" lol

He's going to be out. The way I think of it is if he's out then he can run away from something, if he's in a stable there's nowhere he can run to! There's only a couple of tree's in the field right at the edges but I am a little concerned about the field shelter as it's right on top of the hill south facing so will get the full impact of whatever is coming! I won't be sleeping Sunday/Monday night (not sure what day it's going to hit) and I may just drive down to check on him through the night if it's bad as I'm only 3 miles out.

I've just checked and it's Monday the warning is for

You've all put my mind at ease about leaving them out still. We will all be on here posting at stupid o'clock because we can't sleep

Good grief it's not hurricane Katrina coming over! I'm sure they will be fine in or out provided there are no rotten trees or rotten rooves etc. ;-)

Mine are out 24/7, their shelter blew over to the other field last year, luckily they weren't in it, it's more sheltered now but worried sick, just had a new storage shed put up as well, I've got them in two acres at the mo with plenty of bushes and a shelter (for now) to go in and I will be keeping their rugs off! Eeek!

It has been wild and wet here (Pays de la Loire) since 5.00am. All mine (14) came in last night and were happy to be out of it.

It is clearing now - so hey ho lots of mucking out to do.

Its not irrational watching and heeding warning. just a simple run of eye over yard to make sure anything loose like wheelbarrows are secure all tarpulins over hay are secure is good practice. ok winds may not be as bad as saying BUT if the 80mph gusts do hit best be safe than sorry. :)

We will be leaving out, I would be worrying far more keeping them in. Keep safe everyone and remember to make sure your torches are working!

Apparently the borders have an Amber alert, I'm near Glasgow/Stirling and the winds have already been quite strong all night... not sure how much longer my sons trampoline will last!

Horses are still out at night, in their huge field surrounded by tall hedges, plus a wind breaker hedge down the middle of the field, I'm sure they'll cope :)

I'm also in Pays de la Loire and I brought mine in last night, they were happy to be out of the wind and torrential rain. Apparently it is due to be worse tonight so I will be bringing in again. Stables are solid as a rock (granite built) and all loose materials, wheel barrows etc have been secured. If it gets really bad I will probably be spending the night with them just to be on the safe side!! I do also agree with the leave them out theory, the only thing that stops me is I can't get out of my mind what would happen if a tree or other debris demolished the boundary fence and they got out to the main road, or they purely got scared and tried to run through it, so in wins for me. I however wish everyone a safe night whatever they decide.

At our yard the four who are usually in (including mine) will be in and the remaining ponies who live out (about 8 of them) will stay out - we will secure/put away anything that could become a projectile and the yard is very sheltered. In addition, the stable block is slap bang in the middle of a family compound and in full view of at least three of the family's houses so if there is a problem with the barn there are plenty of people about to deal with it.

Short of sleeping in his stable with him, I am not sure how much more I can do to make sure he is safe.

P

Will definitely leave them out as in two large fields and with a whole herd, can't stand the idea of the stable roof coming off, and all the noise. It will be a worry though - in at the moment having feed and stocking up on hay.

All out on my yard.

My stables were destroyed by a freak tree than had uprooted AND blown across an entire field in 1998 (in France). Luckily I think the horses must have kicked their way out/jumped out before the destruction as all four of them were found in a vegetable garden 5 miles up the road (having the time of their lives, no doubt!) ... No one could have predicted that this huge tree from quite far away would travel all the way to us. I will never forget the feeling my heart when I ran across to the devastation of my stable block, thinking I was going to find my dead horses and blood and god knows what else. Since then I have decided they have a better chance in the outside world.

Getting a bit wild out there now. Apparently, there have already been trees uprooted in the South West and in Kent and that's with gusts of 40-50mph, so it's going to get much worse!

I've actually just got in from the gym and its not that bad in Basingstoke yet! hopefully it wont get too bad tonight! think its due to hit me around 9ish, so we will see!!

I am far less worried about the ones living out that my boy who is in.....he doesn't do wind and rain and will jump the gate to get in, - hey ho......the ones living out are natives and not prone to wasting energy galloping around and just put their bottoms to the wind and munch!!
