KiplingcotesDerby, will be run on Thursday 16 March, a straight 4 mile point to point with no fences predominantly using green lanes and grass verges, (but you sign in at the finish point and have to hack 4 miles to the start so you cover 8 miles). Any horse can enter, and any rider, but must be minimum 10 stone in weight or carry weights to bring you up to that. You just turn up on the day register and take part. The race is over 200 years old and still runs over the same course from Etton to Londesborough Wold, near Beverley in the East Riding of Yorkshire. It is so nice to see an old tradition still continues.

I googled it as I thought the Epsom Derby's older than that, the Kiplingscote reputedly dates from 1519:oops:, amazing.

I did this race a few years ago, it was amazing. We came 5th out of 12 which I was very happy with. I knew we had no chance of winning but I wanted us to give it our best shot and we did. There are two road crossings, no sand or anything, just straight across the road, and one area that gets very churned up with tractors etc. Nothing like a racecourse! The first couple of miles are a steady climb uphill - it's quite a tough ride.

The atmosphere was fantastic though. Most spectators gather round the finishing post but there were a few along the route cheering you on as you went. Fab day! A lot of hard work to get fit enough though, especially in winter if you work full time.

Last bit - the date was wrong on my headcam annoyingly. It was March 2017. You might notice one of the other competitors walking home carrying his bridle 🫢

Was the race on Countryfile or something like that a few years ago? (was foggy that day). Looked great fun.

Not raced in it but did ride part of the course (I think the week before or something?) with Highmoor Bloodhounds once on the orange one. Was a fab day although we were both knackered by the end (think if he’d not had such an intense hatred of clippers & so could have had a decent haircut it may have helped!) Please excuse the duck feet, that saddle always seemed to trick me into riding waaay too long (well that & it made the spooking easier to sit!) 109292

It might have been, it's on Calendar (regional ITV news) every year. The guy from Calendar wanted to use my headcam footage but he couldn't get the date stamp off so it was useless.
