Mare weakly struggled for three days to escape mud

THIS emaciated mare starved to death after it was half-buried in a muddy field.

The young chestnut mare struggled for three days to get up from the deep mud but was too weak to climb out.

Last night animal welfare officers condemned the owners of the animal - whom they were unable to trace - after the officers were forced to put it down.

"I've been involved with the LSPCA for almost a decade and this is the worst cruelty case against horses I've seen," said Limerick animal welfare officer, Noel Shinnors.

"That mare may have been lying in the mud but it died from starvation. There was absolutely nothing for it to eat. The poor horses were eating bushes, shrubs and bark from the trees."

He said the horrific scene had a profound effect on him and his colleagues.

Two weeks ago he got a tip-off that there was an animal in distress in an isolated farm in Knocknagorteeny, Murroe, Co Limerick.

"I spent hours looking for the horse on 40 acres of land which is down a by-road. Eventually I found it and I was disgusted at the sight. The poor horse was almost covered in mud but was still alive."

He called in the Gardai and a vet and they tried to get the horse up. But she was too weak too rise.

It is believed euthanising the horse was the only option.

"It was a beautiful chestnut mare, a gorgeous horse. It was a fine horse and such a waste," said Mr Shinnors.

Mr Shinnors and the vet got stuck in the mud as well as they tended the mare and had to be helped out.

"The mud was nearly over my wellingtons. We had to get a plank of wood so the vet could even treat the horse. There is no way animals should have been allowed on this land and even if they were, their owner should have been checking on them every day or at least every second day," said Mr Shinnors.

There were 10 other horses and a goat on the land. While the gardai, the vet and the LSPCA inspector were at the scene the animals' alleged owners arrived. It is believed they are a well known criminal family from Southill inLimerick city.

They didn't claim ownership of the dead horse but took away three horses that were in better condition. During the night the other animals disappeared. It is thought that the land was rented and then sub-let to this family.

It is believed that gardai cautioned the men for not having proper food for the animals. A report will be filed on the case and then the option of prosecuting the owners will be open.

Animal cruelty cases are notoriously hard to bring to court. Recently a defendant who pleaded guilty to a cruelty case in Co Limerick received a fine of just €500.

Bloody scum bags, hope they rot in hell. Or else let some other Southill Scum bag do the same to them.

the mud when at its worst in our fields this year was over your wellies in places by the gates.

Sadly this doesn't just happen in mud, and I have prosecuted owners for allowing thier horse to starve to death in dry and relatively wealthy Oxfordshire - this kind of neglect is more common than many would think

It is so sad to think that idiots like this own horses and other animals all around the world. Makes you want to believe what goes around comes around doesn't it?

poor horse! one of the cows at mossburn got stuck in a slurry pit when she was a calf (stupid builders left the gate open) and she had to be pulled out with a tractor and ropes! she was only tiny and mud is worse than slurry so i can only imagine how hard it was for the poor mare to struggle to get free

Devestatingly painful to read....Words fail me.
If people have problems looking after their animals why don't they ask for help? And if they can't look after them but wont ask for help that is just inexcusable. Or maybe they could look after them but lack the dedication. Owning an animal is a big responsibility. People who cannot take on that responsibility fully should not own animals. End of.
