Thecauseway horses....an update

a shameless bump to get these horses some help before its too late. The rescue charity that got to see them say some may only have a couple of weeks left before they die of starvation.

......... But it's ok as the RSPCA say there is nothing wrong. We all believe that surely :-/

Having bought 2 criollos from this woman about 4 years ago (thankfully not in that state), I am utterly gobsmacked that the RSPCA refuse to do nothing in this case, yet also in Wales 3 other people have been prosecuted for neglecting horses - a larger quantity granted, but that case must have had more publicity available to them !!!!
This woman struck me then as an uncaring and quite frankly didn't give a damn about her animals then, so it is no real surprise that she has let them get into a state - several bankruptcies behind her, she cannot afford to feed them, and yet she is still allowed to keep the poor things in this condition. Tbh I think that Clywd Davies horses were in a better condition than these wonderful horses, and yet she is still trying to sell them on Facebook with pictures of them back when they were in full health - my friend was very nearly duped by her !!!
I would rescue a few of them in a heart beat but she is still trying to get top dollar for horses near death eg 3 year old filly - very pretty buckskin with Appaloosa blanket for £1600 with no recent photos of it ...............

AAARRRGGGGHHHH - this looks like it will turn out to be another spindles farm case in the long run :-(

Apparently, this is a healthy horse!

That is a fecking disgrace and if these are healthy horses by rspca standards then its time they got someone employed who's capable of condition scoring a horse, if they cant do that theyre as well to give up, as theyre giving up on these poor beasts

I can't believe how anyone could let them get like that! Disgusting and disgraceful, why the hell aren't the rspca trying to rehome them :(

there are 27 horses in 2 acres, 2 mares and foals locked in a muddy coral, RSPCA been called numerous times, they say the horses are in acceptable condition, other welfare agencies trying to act but because the RSPCA wont, nothing can be done at the moment. Vet was refused entry to property yesterday and without support of RSPCA these horses are dying. Other horses (atleast 30) are locked in sheds around the county, also in poor condition.

the owner of the horses refused vet entry, they were taken there by an animal welfare agency. The agency involved is trying everything to get newspapers involved and then maybe the rspca will act!

Does any one know if the BHS been contacted? There was a recent post on their Facebook page reminding people that their welfare officers will get involved where there are welfare concerns.
I cannot believe these poor animals are still suffering, it need seems to end.
Do hope more action can be taken urgently

I'm flabbergasted that the owner tried to stop the vet attending the emaciated mares with foals at foot :( Have borrowed update from page for those who don't have facebook:

Hell and High water

It was Christmas and the UK suffered with severe and adverse weather conditions resulting in flooding. Due to a group of concerned facebookers the media became interested in the plight of a large number of horses trapped in floods in Gloucester, the coverage was dramatic and anyone with an interest in animal welfare held their breath as these horses were seemingly rescued. The RSPCA finally acknowledged there was actually a problem and stood in attendance with firemen and police as the horses were swum across the ever increasing and rising waters. Pleas were issued and the public responded by donating rugs and hay for the cold and traumatised horses. Animal aid provided vet care for the injuries sustained in the floods.

The RSPCA inspector shook the owner's hand despite the dead foals found hidden under rubbish on the sight, their sad decomposing bodies a testament to their suffering, perished in a flood, no, the RSPCA had actually euthanized them some weeks previously and admitted so, once it was established that a vetinary wrap was visible on one of the deceased foals.

To the distress of those on the scene, the injured and and poorest horses were removed by the owner and the rest followed in stages, the dead foals, established to be suffering with salmonella were also removed by the owner form the scene.

The horses, now in donated rugs and having been fed, vanished from face book and from public view.

Happy ever after?

Far from it, a page called address fly grazing in the UK maintained contact with various interested parties and as administrator for that page I visited the farm where the horses are now kept. After speaking to a number of local people who are appalled at the situation these horses are now in we gladly accepted the land owner's permission to visit the farm and holding areas for the horses. A number of the horses have since perished at their new location after surviving the floods and it would appear that the floods had little to do with their demise. The landowner is locked in to a civil dispute with the owner and there is such limited grazing for these horses, many find themselves in closed cattle barns hock deep in their own excrement with no feed, this weekend those horses were finally fed after two days with nothing, perhaps due to our visit? There is a one small paddock which if had any grazing would sustain approximately five horses with supplementary feeding, yet on a bed of hard shingle and equine excrement at least 20 horses were meant to survive, they simply won't!

The horror did not end there, hidden under some trees in a small corral we saw two very emaciated mares with foals at foot,we did not feel we could leave the situation as it was, the owner was not at the premises and we made lengthy calls to charities we are affiliated with and local vets. We sourced the funds to pay for the vet to attend on a Sunday call out, only one practice was willing to attend the location and quite understood our position and concern for the mares along with the foals.

We had made desperate phone calls to the RSPCA for assistance and have been assured the RSPCA and trading standards are working with the owner, well, quite frankly, they are not!

As the vet arrived, as if by magic so did the owner of these horses, the police also attended rather rapidly for such a remote location. The owner and her mother stood guard denying access to the vet and ourselves and claimed we were there at the landowner's behest, we tried to reason and stated that their civil dispute was not of concern to us, however, the welfare of the horses was. Her approach was far from realistic and at one stage she stated ' If they die, it's my resposibilty', the plight of the animals was secondary to her right of ownership, an attitude that from welfare issues, I fail to understand.

If the RSPCA are so active in this situation, why are the locals reporting an almost weekly fatality of the equines in her 'care', why are mares still producing young? Why is this situation allowed to continue and deteriorate so rapidly These are horse that despite surviving hazardous floods and injury will now die of starvation, disease and lack of interest.

The horrors of this visit will haunt me for a long time, the despairing yet, friendly youngsters in the barn designed for intensive cattle farming, the mares with foals ready to drop and suffocate in equine excrement, doomed to what fate now? How many more animals will be produced in this environment and become cause for concern if not despair?

Facebook raised the alarm for these horses and is now used to advertise these poor and pathetic examples of Criollo polo ponies for sale. Buyer beware, very few of these horses would now survive transportation, let alone next winter.

There were some quite "enthusiastic" people who helped publicise the plight of these horses the first time round. One or two posted on here if I recall, could be worth a pm to them. I'll have a hunt. Oops, think the above was written by them. Apologies.

Call the BHS! Their welfare officers are fantastic. I called them a couple of years ago about some horses I was concerned about and they acted immediately, and didn't give up until the issue was resolved.

So where are these horses?
What's the address?
What's the name of the owner?

I don't understand all the secrecy. If you make a facebook page about this, tell the people who read about it who is doing this and where it is happening.

So what is WHW, the BHS, the council's animal welfare dept and the police doing ? Are they standing by while the horse's perish ?

Why haven't the police prosecuted as they apparently attended with a vet and surely, under the animal welfare act, have the authority to gain entry ?

I wonder what Gloucester's MP, Richard Graham is doing to help as he's aware of their plight ? Perhaps a few emails would remind him.

I believe they were moved out of the gloucester area after the flood incident??

I cannot believe that the RSPCA have seen these horses shown in the photographs and said they were ok, IF they have attended the location where they are now being kept, it's quite possible they have been shown other horses, horses which are in ok condition, having no lawful right of entry the RSPCA as with the vet who was refused entry can only see what is open to be seen or allowed entry to see???? If these are hidden elsewhere then they need to be informed that there are others there suffering....

I have shared this on FB in the hope of raising awareness of this awful situtuation.

Hopefully, if there is enough public support, then something will be done?

This turning away is rubbish!

The local animal welfare officer at the council (or county council) OR a vet CAN call the police to legally assist them to obtain entry to the premises.

There is NO excuse to keep being turned away

Who the heck down there is allowing this to happen - a qualified vet knows what the procedures are!

Contact Rewings, the BHs and WHW. email them the photos. Contact the local council.
please keep us updated about what happens
