This may have been posted before, but I only read it this morning.
I read a post on here the other day about theives plaiting their targets manes to mark them. But they are now thinking it is some pagen ritual.
Still a bit odd though!!

Its scary what ever it is. Our yard have been made aware of this as has been around our area too. one lady about 15 miles away from us has informed the police that one of her show ponies has been found to have a plait in her mane 3x in the last 2 weeks. she is not sure if is a prank or if it is being tagged to be stolen. either way they have started going into stables to tag them now not just out in fields.
 
When my mare lived out i found her mane plaited several times (not knotted actual big plaits) she never went missing! She has a really long mane and im sure kids would go into the field and mess about with them (as im sure i would have done as a kid)- i certainly would have never thought about it being anything untoward. Anyway shes still here and really if someone had wanted to steal her it wouldnt have been difficult.

I do find this all a bit strange but - my mare has such a thick tail - doesnt have a mane as I hog it (sweet-itch) but her tail is so thick although I brush it, its always like shes got dreadlocks lol. Tbh I dont know what to believe. Because theres so much going around like horses being marked to steal etc and now all this. Plus - when I go outside my hair is awful in the wind lol I think id end up with notts in mine if i was out there the same amount of time my mares outdoors lol. (shes out 24/7)

Well, at least the Western Morning News are not saying it is for theft identification purposes.
