Could any of you knowledgeable people give me your opinion (theoretical or practical) on the following : If your horse leans on your farrier every time he is shod (back end) and the farrier's response is to drop the foot hard so that horse learns not to lean, could the hard knock of the hoof hitting the concrete, in theory, cause spavin?

Brownie points for every answer

I would say most probably not to the first horse, and possibly to the second.
But... I have to ask the question - why were the horses allowed to go on behaving in that manner for such a long period of time? IME leaning behind on a farrier is either due to bad manners, or a physical issue somewhere else, usually the back.

I think you also need to ask yourself, if you were in the farrier's position, how you would have dealt with it? Would you have supported half a ton or more of horse?

I don't know if the method could cause a spavin. But I would say if he's been doing it to the same horse for six years, it does not work.

Talking from the underside of the horse, I have never known droppin g a horse to cause a spavin, Theoretically i dont think it would cause a spavin as the concussion is not on a constant series of concussions and therefor dont think a spavin would be cause.

I have dropped horses and will do it again. It hurts to hold up half a ton of horse. However, over this time period.. i would say that the horse is either stiff.. or does not like where the farrier is putting his leg. Therefore if it was me i would be trying the leg in diffrent positions, or suggest the horse has bute the day before shoeing.
