Just scrolling through and a lot of the threads relate to winter in one way or another :(

I was chatting to my friend at the yard yesterday in the glorious sunshine about our winter plans... its August!

Fingers crossed for a better summer next year :O) x

I am sat looking out the window and it is soooo dark, raining and windy and so cold today! It feels like November today!

I've been thinking about winter a lot recently :( working out everything from what sort of clips I should do, what rugs/bedding/supplies I'll need to get, to working out what time I need to get out of bed to get to the yard to muck out in the mornings (we've moved yards since last winter).

It doesn't help that at work I am often working months in advanced, so the year seems to go round very quickly - I can't believe we're almost already in September!

I've noticed in the last week or so that it's getting dark quite early now, and actually thought about putting the heating on earlier as I was a bit chilly!

Unfortunately winter is on it's way!!

My winter plans are in place already. I share a field with a friend so I will do hay/feed/checks am and she will do pm during the week and do our own at the weekend.

My wish list of coats/boots/gloves/socks etc is written.

Im just hoping for at least a few more warm sunny days for hacking. x

It's not winter I find depressing so much (especially if it's a winter like last years, really not bad at all, hardly any rain, not particularly cold at least not here in Norfolk anyway)

It's the DARK EVENINGS. I HATE THEM  I am a total wuss and will admit I don't like being down yards on my own in the dark. I have little motivation to ride as everyone else leaves the office to go home and snuggle in front of TV in the warm and I leave to trudge around IN THE DARK  It's horrible :( And I have never been on a yard with no lighting or flood lights yet I still find it horrible.

Put lightweight on for tonight its rained here all day and feels like autumn he didn't even walk away as I put it on he normally do's if he dosn't been putting it of doing that for ages I GAVE IN !!!

That's because it felt like it!!!

I had my farrier at 9am and was dressed in a winter coat and thermal socks - the horses were shivering despite having rain sheets on overnight and were actually grateful to come in to their dry stables and a net.

However it is now brilliant sunshine and they are back out rugless, but will be putting them back on later.

Thankfully the forecast looks better for the next few days, but the night temps are definitely dropping and noticed it was pretty much dark by 8.30 pm last night.

I don't mind winter as we hunt, so is 'fun' time. I also love having them stabled at night and was only considering today when they will start to come in - probably the weekend after Hoys.

I have noticed this too a lot of friends are talking about clearing out the stables ready for bringing back in. They are also sending rugs off for cleaning! Dont want to think about winter as we've not had much of a summer :(

We need a bit of summer before winter comes. Its a disaster here at the moment only a third of the hay/haylage cut and no sign of suitable weather forecast before sunday and by then who knows! Was just on with the feed company (we buy direct) and all their feed has gone up 60 euros a tonne since the last order at the end of July and will probably go up again before winter due to the drought in the grain growing regions of the US and the rain here. Its going to be a very expensive time for horse owners.

the summer may not be over yet... please nooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

Exactly!! No one says in February "It won't be long now till summer's here" at our yard, yet come July everyone keeps going on and on about winter stuff. Dammit - I just ordered two turnout rugs in readiness due to peer pressure :D

That's 'cause secretly we love the hardship - how awful it all is. All the work and the lugging and the frost.... I think we secretly love Winter and can't wait for it because it's when most of our horses rely on us most. My mare would honestly hate living out, of course she would get used to it I know that but she LOVES coming in to her bed in the Winter. I love the winter work but I hate the lack of light and no floodlights means no riding in the week if I wanted to :(

I work late afternoon/early evenings mostly, so thankfully I have at least a couple of days midweek when I can ride, (as well as weekends).

The thing I hate most about winter is being so tied to times - when the horses are out 24/7 in summer I can pop up there in the morning, or afternoon or evening as suits me, without thinking that by 2.30 pm in the winter, my horse will be standing by the gate waiting for me.

well after all the rain weve had this summer im just hoping we get time for the ground to dry out before the freeze comes cos other wise it will be a skating rink til march again! :(

Had a lovely Autumn mist in the gloom of 5.50am this morning at the stables - I love the autumn (but hate the early dark evenings when they come).

Local temps forecast to be down to feeling like 5 degrees tmorrow night - Big Fuzzy had better dig out her running shoes as her rugs are staying firmly in the cupboard - it will be too warm to rug when I'm there at 7.30pm tomorrow night...

TFF, wanting leaf scrunching (but NOT leaf sweeping & raking!)

Last winter wasn't too bad at all till December. September-November were really good. I remember November being really quite warm (as novembers go), January and February drizzled constantly and March was so dry our fields were like deserts.

Don't despair too soon - there's a lovely high pressure building over the Atlantic so hopefully we're in for a nice September :D

September is usually nice then everyone goes on about it being an Indian Summer (which I discovered from reading the little house on the prairie books is acutally american indians rather than asian ones)

We've hopefully got a few more months until winter, whatever happened to autumn:confused:

I always think of winter starting in December, hopefully we won't get snow or freezing temperatures early like we did in 2010.

I am currently having the 'to clip. or not to clip' debate with myself, if we get a rotten winter I always regret clipping as I don't ride much, and if I don't clip you can guarantee a mild winter and sweaty pony! Decisions decisions.

im currently sat in work (i know im so busy) ;)

and it just looks cold and dark outside and theres definatly a crisp nip in the air! ive been thinking about winter already  ...hopefully the better weather they're forecasting for next week will help us all snap out of it :)

Not looking forward to it. I don't mind the weather - hell I love, love LOVE snow!! But I despise the dark. Not because I am scared of it, I'm not - but just because it's so ruddy inconvienient!! I have to get more work into less hours! I am not a morning person and prefer to ride in the evening, this is scuppered in winter, so to hack I have to get up early! I loathe schooling so no choice!!

Ive been talking winter too oops :( but need to get prepared again with new rugs to be bought, wellies bought new riding boots, winter coat, gloves scarf set you name it.
Im getting rubber matter down before winter comes too, so when he has to stay in he can have a minimal bed down then night time a big bed.

Im a little anxious as my new yard's muck heap is quite a treck from the yard up a dark lane next to sand school it has no lights and surrounded just by open fields :( so am really really not looking forward to mucking out in evenings (I only go up once a day) YO turns out for us all.

I love winter when its cold and crisp but hate hate hate the wind and rain in your face :( :(

Oh well us brits aye!!!!
