What are the things about a horse you do/cannot live with?

I am a bit bored as you can see!

I do live with-
Bowed tendons on front legs, lack of confidence jumping and a dirty stop at some fences, slight nervous about big vehicles (only really lorrys and towing tractors, I just have to get them to stop and then we go passed them) and general cheekiness!

I couldn't live with-
A horse that kicked, a horse that was generally nasty to me :(, probably couldn't live with big problems loading, shoeing because it's regular and I wouldn't want that stress.

Could live with - anything apart from the pure 24/7 true bratty horses, ones that won't be caught, ones constantly looking for something to spook over and resist going forwards.

Hmm. Well couldn't live with a horse that had sweet itch I don't think - people who do have my endless admiration for how they cope!

I like a horse to be generally good in traffic, couldn't live without one horse that hacks out alone! Couldn't live with a horse that was slow/lazy/needed a lot of leg! Nor one that was OUTLANDISHLY spooky.

Can live with: occasional bucks, spins, sideways cantering, leaping, inability to trot (only does walk and canter) moments of absolute ridiculousness.

Saying that, I have more than one horse and they are all different so its not so bad if one won;t hack out, one spooks and one doesn't jump!

Now that I have a hrose that jumps, i like to jump. But I spent 10 years with one horse that doesn't.

I'm quite easily pleased so long as they are fun, and not out to get me killed!

Oh yeah forgot the won't be caught thing. Actually, saying I'm not fussy and now I think of the other horses at the yard that

won't be hosed
won't be clipped
won't load
won't stop barging in/out of stable
won't stabd for farrier
won't let vet near

And I think, none of mine are like this! Some of them were, but aren;t any longer, so yes, agree with Binky. Don;t like the 'won't be's'

can live with- bucking stroppyness tanking off nuttyness rearing cantering sideways spinning spooking pawing

cant live with- biting laziness (constantly usuing leg) lack of character bargyness

I live with.... her being 4 inches shorter than I wanted! (and general wildness, tanking, etc - but that's part of the fun ;))

I won't live with a horse that doesn't enjoy its work. Most other things I would put up with if I clicked with the horse's personality. Although I agree with the earlier post about sweetitch - my first pony had it and I couldn't go through that again :(

won't be hosed
won't be clipped
won't load
won't stop barging in/out of stable
won't stabd for farrier
won't let vet near

We have several of them on our yard too - but I do think these things are mainly training issues so fixable if the rest is right:)

Couldn't live with a horse that had the need to be stabled and molly-coddled.

I live with Phil so that covers a lot of spookiness and general silliness, but he isn't a dangerous horse :) Even with his fear of oil tankers and car carriers he doesn't try to bolt, buck or rear, he swings his bum and grows to 17hh :p

i can handle, horses having to be stabled all year, but out during the day, spookiness, nervousness, dirty stops, bucking, some napping as long as they go forward.

i cannot handle horses who have no manners!, ones that will kick the stable door in the morning or barge past their owners on the way in from the field, horses pawing the ground i just want to scream. they drive me bananas, thank fully taz doesnt do any of these

Thought of another - i expect to be able to open the stable door and hook it back BEFORE putting headcollar on and tying up, and without horse exiting stable. Grr.

Milliepops - think you're right - these 'problems' are mainly man made at our yard!

i do live with:
hobday op (and have had 2 previous horses that made a noise, doesnt bother me for dressage)
sharp/quirky hack
not good in heavy traffic

i dont mind stallions, or rearers, or horses that dont hack full stop, horses that are a pain to clip or wont jump.

i wont put up with:
bad work ethic
bad loader
bad to catch
hoof or leg problems
nasty in the stable

i can work round most things for a talented horse but cant stand time wasting problems, like being a pain to catch or load, and it must be a horse that i want to *be around* so half decent stable manners are a must.lifes too short to spend most of it trying to get the damn thing where you want it without getting mauled in the process!

ironically Star isnt the best loader, but iv found a quick quirk to deal with that and as long as i follow procedure step by step he goes on first time-so i can deal with doing weird things if it gets results too!

I couldn't live with a poor doer, a bolter or anything that won't be caught.

I do live with a spooky little mare who gets hopelessly over-excited jumping, & I have a constant battle to keep her weight down. Wouldn't have it any other way ;)

Couldn't live with:

-bucker
-rearer
-sweetitch
-plod that needed to be kicked on all the time

Can live with:

-sharp
-spooky
-mareish

I live with:

Splints (old, cold, not troublesome)
Refusing to have mane pulled (drives me nuts but i cope with it by wielding a pair of sissors and a a mane rake.....)
Grumpy faces as long as they don't lead to anything
Can't be turned out alone
Mild headshaking when hacking if the flies are bad
Has to be shod every 4 weeks in summer

Couldn't put up with:

Bad traveling and loading
Spookiness for no reason
Biting or kicking or general nasty manners
Sweetitch
Headshaking in the school
Naughty for farrier/vet/destist
Tendon/ligament/foot problems

Wouldn't buy a horse that is:

Prone to laminitis
Prone to sweetitch
A Rearer
Won't load
Won't hack alone

My horses are close to perfect except one needs to be sedated to be clipped, and the other cribs mildly. However, they both are well mannered and never let me down, and always come home from events thinking how well behaved mine are in comparison to others!

Currently live with
spooking at bushes...or anything else equally not scary
needs encouragment to load
hot headed-ness
bucking
spinning

Couldnt live with
Rudeness-barging out the stable, biting, kicking ect
bolting
headshaking
unwillingness to work
lazyness

I live with...

....a stressy weaver whose a bit sharp and drops weight easily. However he is nice natured and very loving so I 'manage' his routine to minimise his stressiness.

I don't mind.....bucking for fun, spirited horses...

I wouldn't put up with

...rearing, bolting. Kicking- I have kids so they need to be safe.

Most things can be managed or worked upon, I feel, but if you haven't got that 'bond' then I don't see the point- I would rather sell and find one that I clicked with even if it had issues.....

I live with:

Spookyness
Lack of confidence
An incredibly sweet nature to humans and other horses
good dooer
standing still whilst I get on out hacking

Can not live with

Bad manners in or out of stables which includes not being caught
Biting and kicking

My horse is pretty good actually... it's taken me a while to think of anything that I have to 'live with'...
I'd say the only things I can fault him for are:
a messy bed, being slightly sharp in winter, not liking to be the only one left out in the field in the evening... that's it really.

So in that respect, I'm lucky enough to be able to say I wouldn't want to live with a horse that was nasty/difficult/dangerous/bad mannered in any way, lol. I'm spoilt I think.
