There Problem or Money Back?

People at my livery yard bought a 4yo 3 months ago which when it arrived was very green, needing a lot of work which unfortunately they have not put in and recently he has bucked the rider off and now there is a total loss of confidence. Horse and Rider.

These people are now wanting the previous owner to take the horse back for a full refund but this suggestion has been declined as the amount of time which has elapsed and the value of the horse has now sustantially decreased. IMO it will be several months work to get this youngster back on track as he has been totally ruined. He passed a 5 stage vetting and had been professonally broken and ridden for approx 7 weeks before they bought him - he was sold as a green and can be sharp 4yo suitable for bringing on for competition.

I feel the new owners now must bite the bullet and get professional help, which will cost them - but they feel they should get there money back!

Any thoughts - other than another good young horse ruined by an over ambitious family.
 
I certainly wouldn't be giving them the money back if I had sold them the horse! I may consider buying the horse back at a much lower price, but no way would I give a full refund.

Such a shame for the poor horse

If he was sold as green and inclined to be a little sharp and needing work, what did they expect? I don't feel they can ask for their money back because the horse has turned out to be exactly as described. I agree, they should pay for professional help or be prepared to take a loss if they decide to sell the horse. Perhaps it would be best for the horse if he was sold to someone with an idea of how to train him properly. One way or another it is going to cost them.
 
Well they did buy the horse so they should sort out the problem. The horse has not been ruined, time and effort can fix the problems. They must go back to basics and start again. A horse is for life as is any other pet they become family, and you will form very strong bonds of friendship. Starting again with the horses training will help get it back on track and will form a strong bond between horse and rider if done correctly.

My first reaction is tought sh*it!

If they couldn't be bothered to put the necessary work in early on then its their problem. It sounds as though his advert was as honest as possible so what were they expecting.

If they have they inclination and could start again from scratch I have a feeling it would be an amazingly satisfying experience but if they didn't put the work in when they already had a head start, I can't say I'd be optimistic about them doing it 2nd time round!
 
Has it only bucked the rider off once?

Has it been regularly ridden, hacked out, etc?

Has mis-management (like lack of turnout/over-feeding) played a part in causing the bucking?

I think "green and sharp" is different to "will dump you because its windy, it had a day off, it just felt like it, etc". But if its a genuine horse that just needs treating as a baby then they should pull their finger out and either persevere or send it for sales livery and let someone else have the opportunity. If its a horse with a real unpredictable streak, I agree with them that they should go back to the old owners and pursue returning it, even after three months.

Agree with Magicmillbrook. I have always offered to take a horse back soon after if a sale isnt successful - I took a horse back a few months ago BUT he'd only been in the home 1 week

I would probably take a horse back at any point purely as I love my horses and always want the best for them BUT I would expect to pay way less if they'd ruined it!
