I know, I know, Thermal Imaging on horses has its limitations. I have spoken to the vet treating my horse, and also to a couple of people who have used thermal imaging on themselves.

I am thinking of getting one of the thermal imaging cameras that you attach to your mobile phone / ipad ( ie Thermavet or Flir). This would be for my own use while rehabilitating a horse after suspensory injury. The cost is around £200 which is a drop in the ocean on my vets bills at the moment. Does anyone own / or have any experience of these particular cameras? What level of image do you get? (I have seen a FLIR i5 in use, but that camera is higher spec and so much more expensive that I could afford for home use.) Or are there any other reasonably priced cameras I should consider?

Many thanks in advance.....

I have one.

The pictures they use in the advert are from the highest spec camera which costs around £15,000. The images you get from the £200 are ok, but not likely to be a huge amount of use.

You have to use them in a very particular way - being a couple of inches closer will give you different readings than a couple of inches further away.

Remember there are only certain phones which are compatible - I had a Windows phone, and had to shell out for a suitable phone as well which was another couple of hundred.

These are the sort of images I got with mine :)

Thank you very much. Very useful to see the level of detail compared to the higher spec (and higher priced!) camera. Below is a picture from the expensive camera for comparison. I think based on that, I will leave it....

I think I would be tempted to use a company such as SyncThermology or Veterinary Thermal Imaging and get them to do a regional scan - wouldn't be hugely expensive and would give you a far better idea of what is happening. I'm not sure about VTI but SyncThermology provide a veterinary interpretation of the scans so you would perhaps get more useful feedback than that from a standalone image?

I have used one (attached to a CAT phone I think and retail around £300), I think you have to be careful when using the budget ones with temps/conditions etc. I used the one I had on loan one cold March evening, pony was clipped and he had an abcess at the time (which does show I think).

This is al ink to some of the pics I took: https://www.flickr.com/photos/lauraflynn/albums/72157682748479264
