Can anyone recommend good thermal layers? I've seen some mountain horse ones if anyone knows if they're any good?
Was frozen riding yesterday! :(

I'd always favour natural fibres like silk and merino... Have a look in TK Maxx if you have one nearby.

Also not natural but Uniqlo's Heattech line is cheap and cheerful.

My husband and I got some from Asda a while back and they are very good, we even wore them on a few holidays in the Arctic Circle

They get dug out and worn every winter

The absolute best thermals are made from Merino.

I have loads of thermals for riding and hiking and my favourite is made by SmartWool (their socks are great too). My husband has a lovely one by Icebreaker.

Helly Hansen are also good, and if your budget won't stretch to Merino their standard thermals are pretty much the best out there.

Mountain Warehouse currently have merino thermals for about £25 which is VERY good, although I suspect the quality won't be quite as good as Icebreaker/Helly Hansen/Smart Wool.

I would also recommend these guys http://www.embersmerino.com/ I met them a couple of years ago as they are based near where I live, lovely people, a small relatively new company based in the UK. My husband had a T-Shirt from them which he has worn and worn and worn and worn and worn - really excellent, and quality on a par with the big names. In fact their stuff is possibly even finer softer knit than the big boys..... plus they make their thermals look pretty so you don't have to worry about being seen wearing them on the outside!

Are merino thermals like other wool items? (I'd like to know because I find wool jumpers and scarves itchy)

For legs I like either M&S heatgen leggings or primark fleece lined tights. In fact the fleece lined tights are just amazeballs for everything.

For tops I have a variety - Adidas running skins, M&S, Aldi and a few skiing layers of nondescript brand. All good.

Are there any really stretchy thermals? I find a lot of them a bit stiff and have the same problem as I get with tights - they are not long enough and have to yank them up all the time!

Yeah the M&S heatgen stuff is super stretchy. I've got 34 inch legs so i need super stretchy or I end up with a saggy crotch and nobody wants that :D

I recently got a pair of thermal tights from M&S that I wear under my jods and also under (my very thin) work trousers that seem to do the trick. Trouble with me is my feet. I honestly haven't been able to feel my poor toes this past couple of weeks. I wear good quality thermal socks when riding and at work (I work outside in -5 degrees) and my feet are frozen solid.
Someone recommended putting aluminum foil in my shoes. I haven't tried it yet but think I'll need more than that to thaw out my ice cube tootsies.
Any suggestions very welcome.

Heat Holder socks are fantastic. I'm diabetic and my circulation isn't the greatest but I'm warmer in just a pair of them rather than the tights socks and welly boot liners I wore last winter.
Indoors I've found my feet are warmer in just these than ordinary socks and slippers, if you buy the long ones even better.

you're all wrong.
I have tried nearly every thermal outfit known to man ( i was born in the wrong country as CANNOT stand the cold) and the ONLY ones that work well enough (and are nice to wear) and Campri thermals. Get them from sports direct for a cheaper price. They are soft, cosy and really warm.

That's good to know - I always wear a BoT long sleeve T shirt or the polo neck to keep warm in Winter and have a BoT woolly hat but haven't tried the leggings/socks etc. But need to sort something out as I think I'm a bit more of a cold-wimp this year than last year!
