...and it is apparently bad for the horse to be left in one too long.

Sorry, this was posted in the rugs thread below and it made my jaw drop. Only_me, who posted it, can you please explain? Proof please?

I really don't understand the logic behind this at all. Does this go for all wicking rugs, such as fleeces as well? I would be grateful if you could explain as my horse is stabled overnight in a Coolex stablerug and I wouldn't want to be doing her damage!

I would have thought that if the rug was used as a wicking rug and was taking the water off then to leave the horse in what is to all extents and purposes a wet rug is not a good thing. However, I cannot see how a dry rug could do harm.

When a thermatex is used on a wet horse, in my experience, it stays relatively dry on the inside, and the wet goes to the outside of the rug.

I'd be interested to know why someone thinks they can't be left - we have commonly used them as stable rugs in the past.

Do you have a Thermatex? The moisture wicks through the rug, drying the horse, and leaving the inside dry. The moisture sits on the outside where it evaporates away.

I can honestly say that even putting one on a pretty wet horse, the rug itself doesn't become wet. It draws the moisture through and away. That's the whole idea.

Absolutely, G. So along the same lines of reasoning, if I wear a moisture wicking underlayer, will this dry my skin out, rather than just wicking away sweat (sorry to be so graphic, ladies...)? I must say I have never noticed...

OMG when I get to the yard tomorrow instead of Maggie there will be a 17.2hh beef-jerky in her stable!

Well actually I bought her as full up 16.1 and when i finally got round to measuring her properly last year ( i have only had her 9 years!) she actually measures 15.3 so maybe there i have shrunk her!

There is the proof! They will have to start selling these rugs with a warning on.

*goes to buy an additional 6 rugs to try and get gigantic mare down to 16.1hh*

Gosh I am very scared now

I use a Coolex TO rug (bloody fantastic invention) and I leave it on for hours...now worried I am going to arrive to find a 12.2hh in place of my 17.1hh!!!

They do. You lose 10 lbs overnight but age 20 years due to the dehydration....
