I'm thinking of buying a Thermatex rug for Ellie, mainly to use underneath her stable rug instead of a summer sheet + blanket.I've read lots of past posts about them - as am weighing up the Thermatex versus the Mark Todd - and have one real question: do they tend to slip back on narrow horses? Part of my problem with summer sheets is the fact that they pull back and rub her shoulders and withers - the only rugs that fit her perfectly are the Masta Regal stable rugs, as they have the shoulder vents. I'm worried about shelling out all that money for a Thermatex, only for it still not to fit correctly - I did that once with a Rambo fleece and really regret it now, for it slips back so much I don't like using it.

Any experiences? Thanks in advance!

i dont think you will have a problem as long as you get the right size-thermatex advise you to go down one size but i would go down two TBh-my TB is a 6'6 in other rugs, and his new 6'3 thermatex is a bit too big really, he would have been better in a 6'0. his older thermatex that goes under his turnout rugs started off life as a 5'6!!!!!! thats how much they stretch.!!!!!!!

avoid colin cook thermalux as the necks on those are ridiculously big and would only fit an elephant!!!

ETA-make sure you double the neck straps back though the metal fixing on the front of the rug, as otherwise it gets looser and looser and WILL slip back.

In my experience yes they do. I have an old TB who had one and it was lovely but just kept expanding and expanding. If I was a dab hand with the knitting I could have made another head hole and fitted both my horses in it.

I have since been told to buy one at least a size smaller but tbh I think its more that they don't fit small chested horses.

I think you will find that the Thermatex 2000 - the ones with the smaller quilt squares - are cut to suit narrow horses a lot better than the standard ones - and with the smaller squares, dont stratch as much.

I've never had a problem with Rogers slipping back and its too big, he got it after rubbing a hole in the rug that belonged to my sisters fell.
He's very narrow and pointy but the thermatex is a good fit.

I love my Thermatex rugs and my Colin Cook Thermalux too. I get around the wider-than-needed neck problem by simply darting either side of the neck. The material is easy to sew and it's very easy to get a nice neat look. This has solved all pulling back at the neck on my narrow youngsters .

I love my thermatex and have collected a few but I would use them as under rugs - I find that if left on overnight, they have always slipped back in the morning

I have a Colin Cook Thermalux and it fits like a glove on a 16.1hh warmblood. She isnt narrow but then she isnt built like an elephant either

Does its job perfectly.

WOuld never use as under rugs as they dont stay there. and personally would only leave them on as day rugs rnot over night.

my narrow pony has a weather beeta thermo cooler which fits perfectly!!
