Has anyone else noticed how expensive Thermatex rugs have become? I have been an avid user of them until now. Someone recommended I try a Mark Todd Coolex or a Thermalux rug. They seem to be very similar but a heck of a lot cheaper. Can anyone tell me what either of the Mark Todd or Thermalux rugs are like? Got to watch the pennies these days....

Theyve always been more than I was wanting to pay. Ive had a look at the MT ones in a shop and they felt nice quality, Ive never used one though.

I'm with anymay.
I've always wanted one but have never been able to afford one. :(
Not looked at the price resently though. Have they got more expencive :(

If you can get your hands on a Weatherbeeta Thermo Cell, they're twice as good a rug IMO and wash far better, don't attract bedding as much, don't stretch and half the price!
The Thermolux stretch almost as much.
I haven't tried the MT Coolex but they look similar to Thermo Cell fabric.
Swish now do the Thermo Cell - but their rugs are nowhere near deep enough for my show cob.

Wait till mid November & keep an eye on Ebay, we have the Thermatex sale here & alot of rugs are bought & go straight on Ebay (one lady must have bought about 50 rugs when i was there), so you might pick up a bargain.

Ebay will be your friend if you don't mind second hand; it's the only way I can afford quality stuff now.

Thermalux are fine, do the same job and as well - but seem a slightly looser woven fabric so stretch a bit more than Thermatex but go back to size after washing. I've also got a couple of Premier Equine thermocooler (I think) rugs; again, do exactly the same thing but I've found the binding on those shrinks on washing.

If you can afford it, Thermatex are definitely the best quality IMO and if I need to buy second hand to afford one I do.

I got lucky and bought my Thermatexes off a showjumper who was out of ponies... But before that I was perfectly happy with the Weatherbeeta Thermocell.

Im assuming that Thermatex have an outlet or sale, they are in Wales Im sure.

We have the Thermatex factory where they make them, in Cardigan, West Wales, they have a big sale around November time every year, its a bit bonkers to be honest, its like one of those American store sales, with crazy ladies arguing over who got the rug first & stuff lol. Its worth going to as its not just rugs they have in the sale there is (or was when i went) a lot of leather work as well, im still kicking myself for not buying the Jaguar Bridle they had there, it was only £35, looked online afterwards & they are £120 normally :(

I brought a thematex rug and leg wraps for half price in a local sale. Can't say it's that great wouldn't buy another and def not at full price

I hate scrum sales, couldnt be bothered with that.

I always wanted a thermatex, but I dont need one. Will try to remember to look on ebay next month though :)

I prefer Thermalux rugs, I've still got some that are about 20 years old. The fasteners are better than than Thermatex and they have cross surcingles. They're hard to come by now though, aren't they? I've also got a masta thing along the same lines. That's a lot lighter than both Thermalux and Thermatex but it does the same job and its brilliant for winter traveling when you want some warmth but not too much.

This is it, its a really handy rug

Thermatex were always expensive. We sold them at £95 for the samller and £104 for the bigger ones, which was less than RRP and we closed 5 years ago!! I googled them a few weeks ago, and they are still about the same price, and you can now buy them direct, this is new since they changed hands.
They are worth the money some of ours have been on the go for over 10 years.

The best rugs ever often copied never bettered my oldest has been in heavy use since 1991 we have travelling ones and yard ones they are never allowed to be loose in the stable in the travelling ones .
If you wash them in a wool wash product they last for years and years and always buy a size smaller.

I bought my first Thermatex rug over 20 yrs ago, used until my mare was PTS and now the dog has it, she loves it :D

2nd one was bought for gelding over 10 yrs ago and still in excellent condition, they are well worth the money IMHO!

I've just bought a Colin Cook Thermalux, 2nd had (it was advertised as a thermotex!) but it's almost identical to the thermatex's and in fact has much better fittings, it's cut nicely for my pony too. Also got it with four matching boots. Very handy :D

They have certainly increased in price especially in the past year. We have bought some Mark Todd Coolex rugs for the first time this year and they are great quality and just about nearly half the price of Thermatex if you buy them on Ebay. They are fantastic quality, they wash well, don't seem to stretch and rub shoulders like the Thermatex rugs do, and the fittings are much better. We got the brown and cream ones - they match the rest of the Mark Todd rug range. We definitely recommend them to everyone
