I hear that you need to go down a size with these, is this correct?

So given the above, does anyone know where I might pick up a bargain 6' cooler wicking rug of the Thermatex kind?

Ive found eBay v good for Thermatex, esp if you dont mind your 17hh bay hunter wearing baby blue.

I like the real Thermatex better than the lookie likeys

Nothing nicer than horses snuggled in them after being out in the foulest weather :-)

I've never been a fan of the way thermatex rugs slide back and pinch the horse's chest so badly. Even sizing down you still get this.
They're fine if they're only popped on for a short period to absorb moisture, but certainly these are not suitable as overnight stable rugs IMO

I bought a new thermatex at burghley and it arrived yesterday... had to send it back because even though i bought it a size smaller it hung off him like a bedouin tent! I am reordering 2 sizes smaller . Just wanted to warmn you!

Agree with this totally! Especially if you have a big withered TB!
Infact anything made of a stretchy type material - fleeces etc.

I got an ebay bargain on mine - the new (smaller square) design in 6'3" brand new with all tags etc for £48. I bought it for my horse that takes 6'3" thinking it would be a bit roomy (had heard you should go down a size). Well, there is no way it fitted him at all, so it is now used on my horse that takes 7'3" and it fits him like a glove.

Have a look at the Bucas shamrock power. I have one that's now 4 years old and I've been very pleased with it. It's a good cooler, it's never gone out of shape and I've used it as an extra layer in winter.

I couldn't get a thermatex to fit my mare - 7ft was ridiculous, 6 ft 9 was OK round the shoulders but still slipped over her bum so it pulled back & she pooed all over it, but 6 ft 6 was too tight :o I have bought her a Masta Hi Wick rug in her normal size (7ft) instead and it's great, she can wear it all night & it doesn't slip (it has crossover belly straps) and it seems to wick away sweat as well as a thermatex ;)

Interesting to read about the sizes. Stinky won the Trailblazers class section championship and the prize was a Thermatex rug. I asked for a 6'3 which is his normally size and am now wondering whether it will end up on Farra who is a 6'9 - 7'.

It arrived last week, so I will try it on him this weekend and if it is huge, well I had better go back and see if I can win again next year and get one to fit Stinky:)

I like the type for cooling off, drying off and travelling (I have a Cooltex?), but would not use it as a stable rug; I won't use fleeces either. In my experience they just don't stay put, so would much rather use a 'proper' stable rug.

I much prefer the Weatherbeeta Thermocell to the thermatex - you only need your normal size and they don't tend to slip, and I think look better than the thermatex.
