That would absolutely give me the rage. I don’t do pulled manes and tails either. And if I want my horse aesthetically altered I’ll take him somewhere that specialises in it, thanks.

I'd be so upset and angry.
My welshie has a very thick, long mane. When I bought him his O decided to hog him. I was gutted. Taken 2 years to get it long and thick again.

You mean after you had agreed to buy him, or just that he was hogged when you saw him but you prefer him natural?

I would be fuming! It is no different than a school cutting your child's hair without consent!

It's actually more akin to giving your child a piercing in that there are welfare issues involved both physical (lack of mane) and mental (trust that humans wont hurt)

I’d have been fuming, OP.

And there are pros who advertise mane and tail pulling services, who the gullible or incompetent will employ to pluck their horses. The poor ned gets all its hair pulled out in one mammoth session instead of in several short sessions, as it should be done.

It happened to mine while she was out on loan. Previously I’ve solo combed her mane short, I do like short manes but there is no need to pull them to do so. Pulling should be banned. The solo comb et tidies long hair up in a humane manner. Now understandably she gets very upset if I even go to back comb the mane in preparation of using the solo comb on it, so getting her to realise that it won’t hurt now is a work in progress. Her tail was pulled ridiculously short too, but I am letting that grow fully out as I prefer full tails. No more plucking for her.

It’s was pretty silly to do anything to cobs mane from hogged to normal to down to the knees everybody knows that cob owners often have a mane thing going on .
With me it’s not only pulled tails it’s their length as well .

Ye afterwards.
Because his mane hadn't been looked after so was really knotted so she just wacked it all off. I was really upset lol. But it grew back.
This is completely different though, as they are providing a service.

I would have been absolutely gutted about it, but I would have had to back out of buying the horse.

Due to my bad accident, I *have* to hold a big lock of mane when I mount or I go into a bit of a PTSD mental break down and can't get on the horse. So I never view (or ride) anything that is hogged. I fully accept that this is unusual and a bit crazy, but that is how it is.

I'd feel lost too, I'm used to natives with full manes and although I don't hang on by it if I get on a hogged horse I feel vulnerable.

I love my mare hogged (she wears a breastplate for grabbing! Lol) but I would have been absolutely livid if someone had made the decision for me!! Hogging was the best thing for her because I think she had been pulled in the past and she had hated it so much she got slightly distressed with even brushing it (had to brush slowly after applying detangler) and if you happened to catch her mane in the reins while riding it really upset her. She also looks awesome hogged.

Granny horse on the other hand seemed to love her mane being pulled and would go flobby lipped and dozey... same with the ex-racer. Think thoroughbred types sometimes have much more shallow rooted hair and are less bothered by it/seem to enjoy it! I'd only a pull a mane of those types now. Anyone who doesn't enjoy it will get scissored, hogged or left. But that round be my decision to make for my horse! Not someone else's!

I quite like a pulled tail look on the cob bottom but use a tail rake to get it. Her tail is very thick to plait and it looks a bit daft plaited. I actually prefer a tail plait to a pulled tail on most horses though.

Not crazy at all.
Due to my bad accident, I go into absolute meltdown if a horse so much as moves a muscle whilst I mount. And if we are walking along and they whinny...I am out of that saddle faster than the speed of light!

I still went ahead and bought said horse, as after various issues with previous O, I offered pennies and walked away. She soon bit my hand off when she realised nobody else would have him.
Probably a slight ruling of heart over head on my part also haha. But he's a good boy. Had him nearly 4 years.

OP I would be raging at the YO, particularly since you had said to leave it. It's not acceptable at all.

i dont like long manes but would be livid if someone had done anything like that to mine, i hate pulled tails and when showing always plaited. i like all horses to have a full tail (not length) as a bit of protection against the weather...... i used to have a lightweight cob and my friend loaned her and kept her with me, she liked long manes and although i wasnt keen i would never have dreamed on pulling it, and that was a horse i owned....very bad behaviour by that yard...

Many moons ago now (about ten years if my memory serves me correct), I posted on here as my cob was at an equestrian college, and they had hogged him without my consent.

I was furious!! I was actually published on "letter of the week" on H&H; and the YM saw it, who then was assy at me for making an issue of it!

All rather funny in retrospect, actually.

BUT I remember well the fury I felt at the fact that someone had done it!!

The word "Incandescent" didn't come anywhere near describing the sheer outrage I felt at the time tho' - think OP you have the right to be damned angry about this!

FFS what would it have cost to have asked you first?

Yes their excuse will be that "it will grow back", BUT what was the problem with asking you FIRST?

By god, my rage would know no bounds.......

OP you are definitely NOT alone in this...I'd have gone absolutely batshit crazy..!!!!
I personally like long manes and tails and hate the pulled look (each to their own of course).
I'd be devastated in your shoes :( My friend bought her cob in March last year and she was recently fully hogged at the time, she now has a decent, mane, tail and feather that are incredibly thick but it's taken ALOT of patience to get it this far. You have every right to be angry and upset..!!!

I remember your thread;)

And the excuse won't wash - it certainly won't grow back for this showing season!

20yrs ago I had a narrow escape from the same situation- my horse went to the local ag college for a term as I unexpectedly ended up in hospital (not horse related). Once out of hospital I went straight to visit him (unannounced) and arrived just in time to see the yard manager with the clippers in his hand preparing to hog my horse (a hunter, not a cob, but the manager apparently didn't like his double mane!). He did stop when he saw me, and I made it clear that the mane wasn't to be touched. I was only a teenager at the time (I was upset about it, but not confident enough to tick off the manager), but if it happened now I would be absolutely livid and very vocal about it. He was an arrogant sod though, so in retrospect I am actually quite surprised that he didn't go ahead and do it anyway once I'd left

I'd be hopping! My horse My rules. If you don't like it, tough tomato!

Glad you said it though might make them think twice before doing something like that again to someone else.

Both my mares have long manes and tails. They are heavy type, a Shire and a Belgian draft x Comtois (I think) and IMO they suit long manes/tails and in Bonnie's case long feather.

When I bought Bonnie the mane was one of the things i really loved about her appearance, I was horrified to be told they took around 6 inches off her mane and cut her tail down significantly before listing her for sale. It will all grow back and is doing so though. I understand why they would have done it as they were (I think) aiming for the showing community but it's not to me taste.

And, they've got to help with keeping the flies away!
