My pony's coronary band is very thick, and very rubbery. I know they can swell when they get very wet, but all four of his feet seem to have this very thickened, raised rubbery band! He is a NF who I bought last year, and the coronary band did the same last winter. I asked my farrier (he was his trimmer before I bought him) and he said its because the pony has had mild lami in the past. When I bought him he had fat pads and a big cresty neck so I suspect he is EMS, so he is managed as such - I graze him in a muzzle, and I am very careful to check for pulses. He has always been barefoot, and his feet are always pretty warm but no pulses. Is a thick rubbery coronary band a issue or an EMS thing, or is it just because his feet are in the wet grass. Though the summer they look pretty normal, but as soon as its wet they seem to get really big! Just interested to see what others think?

I think it's just the wet - my cob gets the same in the autumn / winter, the coronary bands on his hinds get rubbery and bits peel off (that sounds awful, it's not nearly as bad as it sounds!).

Are his feet otherwise good?

Our loan pony recently had lami, and was tested positive for EMS. He’s just started having turnout on our hard standing. In that soaking wet weather on Friday his coronets looked waxy and strange. I actually sent a photo to the vet, just to check all was ok. They thought it was just due to the weather. They look fine again after a few days of dryer weather.

Thanks all for your replies!

Yes @Widgeon his feet are pretty healthy. My farrier wasn't worried but I think after loosing one to lami, and realising that this boy is prob EMS, I am super paranoid. I just have never noticed them on any of my other horses as prominent as they are on his hooves. Also, my other pony has barely any sign of her coronet band but I guess they are all different!

@Honey08 yes, waxy and strange would be a good description for my boys. They are also alot thicker than they are on my mare, so about 1.5cm and slighly proud of the hoof wall. But I think it probably is the wet so I think I need to relax a bit!

[another side note, @cobgoblin and @Widgeon I live over the hill from the late TP and met him a few times :)]
