I just can't believe this!!! They have nicked my mounting block from outside my gate!!! I am devastated, OH made it several years ago to fit me and my horse!! Pulled up in my cae today and it's gone!!!How am I going to get on??? We have to lock the gate from outside then mount. OH says pykies have had it for scrap but the steps were made of wood. I am sooo upset, it was one of my precious things. What will they take next?

Grrr, I'd be fuming too. Trouble is, if you don't have EVERYTHING locked down with 10 inch chains and oober thick bolts, it goes walkies!

Poor you.

The thing is, because we are on a by-way, it wasn't chained to anything so that we could put the horse between the gate and the block if you know what I mean, so that if she spooks as I mount she was squashed in between the block and the gate tp make it safe if any motor bikes come, if I get another one I will have to chain it to the gate or something. I am sooo annoyed.

We've had bits and pieces go walkabout from our yard as unfortunatley we have a footpath and bridleway that go right past our yard. My mounting block is now 6 tesco home delivery crates stacked on top of each other!!! Not pretty but it's stable and does the job!

Hi Fruity,

How stable are they - excuse the pun - am gonna need to get on today, don't fancy leaving one of my best garden chairs out there! Any other free/cheap ideas greatly appreciated!

Thanks Berspic. Breezeblocks no good it has to be movable as it outside one of a pair of gates-the reasoning behind that is that hopefully no-one would try to ram the gate if there was a mounting block in the way + cannot put it on by-way. It needs to be steps to climb up as I am not so sprightly as I used to be, breezeblocks would be ideal - erm, anyone tried them uncemented? Then they would be movable.

We've ended up cementing our mounting block outside our gate, after the last two got stolen

It's just a big, sturdy plastic box, upturned with the bottom cut off, and then filled with cement. If you need steps, perhaps you could also cement a smaller box next to it?

Not the most attractive, but un-nickable :(

ETA: Sorry, just seen it needs to be moveable, so I guess light enough to carry about. I'm guessing you don't you have anywhere to store a wooden set inside overnight?

I don't know if it would be suitable for you but what about one of those extra stirrup bits that you put on your original stirrup, mount and then put in your pocket - I have seen them used by people who hack out in the forst and have to get on and off from time to time - sorry but I don't know the proper name for them or whether they would be okay for you

Replying to the last 2 posts, I'm not that agile, plus, I will get on from the ground if I absolutely have to but it's not good for the backs to do it every day. Those were the days, Poppymoo, I used to vault on from the ground. (Looks back to past wistfully). OH has been through our scrap metal pile and is busy with welder as we speak, think we might chain to to the fence! I am now wondering if anything else has gone...a £25 gel pad missing from oh's bike for starters...pykies!

I know how you feel my hubby made one for me and it had been outside my gate on a bridleway for years, i do know that several horse riders had used it because there is a gateway the other side I never minded them using it. But I was really upset when I turned up to the field and found the local idiots had set it on fire and it is totally unusable. I now have to use a wall further down the bridleway, I can get on her from the ground but prefer to use a block if at all possible.
