In need of suggestions to get Rox to stop thieving food :(.

In little'uns changing bag I had left an unopened packet of wotsits that is now shredded across the garden, not to mention all the food she manages to steal from places that I'm sure she can't reach in the kitchen.

I've tried chilli powder but that doesnt seem to of worked :(

Locks on the cupboards and fridges/remove or disable knobs or handles. Don't allow her in the kitchen/use a baby gate/crate etc when you are out or cannot supervise her. Don't set her up to fail, if you make damned sure she can't access it and get all the family to be consistent then she won't access it.

Sorry should of been more clear, none of our cupboards have handles, shes managing to steal stuff pushed to the back of the work top that's being left to cool before being frozen down. When we go out she's shut in the utility room with a snack ball and chew toys that are kept purely for when we go out so she has no access to pilfer then.

What's got to me today is the fact she's gone after the unopened stuff, yes I shouldn't of left the bag on the floor but I'd just got in and little'un had had a nappy explode so just dumped it on the floor to deal with him and clean forgot about the wotsits :(

OK, but she dosen't know any of that, she's just a dog who found some yummy food, try not to be too angry with her or it will just make her more sneaky/will try harder not to be caught.

If you need to defrost things or cool them down, put them in a tupperware box that you can seal and then pop them in a cupboard or something.

Believe me even if u think its out of reach it isn't :) as cc said dont set her up to fail most dogs will help themselves given the opotunity!

My two are dreadful counter-surfers. There is nowhere their greedy noses can't get to. So they are always banned from the kitchen. If they can get in, I figure anything is fair game.

One of mine stole a wrapped dirty nappy from a changing bag once, would rather it was a bag of wotsits. :o

Thankfully she just carried it around like a smelly trophy and didn't actually try to eat it...

I have a surfer/snatcher, it's been nearly two years now and we still haven't been able to override that instinct, he's got food issues generally related to his early upbringing before we had him. As above, we just keep things out of the way - no food is left on counters, everything goes into tupperware and into the fridge or the breadbin. Anything that needs to cool is left in the microwave, he hasn't figured out how to open that yet!

I think either Freya or Evie has learned how to open the microwave! When Pickle was staying the other week I put his food in the microwave to cool, now the first time I may well have just pushed the door to, and came back into the bowl, still in microwave but empty! I was actually quite impressed, and over the rest of the week it happened twice more, when I am bloomin sure I shut the door.
OP, agree there is really little you can do apart from make sure all food is completely out of reach. In the past I have had pockets chewed out of jackets because I have left treats in there.:p

One of our lurchers is a dreadful thief, whole hams, sandwiches, contents of food recycling, kitchen bin - you name it he's eaten it! We've been to the emergency vet at least twice after he's managed to open the kitchen door (despite it being barricaded shut on both sides) broken into the cupboards and eaten bags of raisins, rice, chocolate & popcorn!! Life with him was incredibly stressful - now we have fitted a lock to the kitchen door and make absolutely sure if we go upstairs or into the garden that we close & lock the door, just makes life that bit easier and also accepting the fact that he is an opportunist and given the opportunity WILL steal whatever he can!! Good luck! :)
