My laminitic Shetland always get foot sore 10 days after being trimmed, someone advised to paint his soles with iodine, has anyone else tried this or recommend anything else

Diet?
cushings tested?
who is doing the trimming? Do they know he is sore for 10 days post trim and what have they said about that?

To answer your question - my retired barefoot TB has just had ANOTHER visit from vet due to bruised sole AGAIN and the vet from a large equine practise recommended iodine to put on soles to harden them up. :). First time I had heard of it but he said it was the best he had found. Hope that helps.

He is on a strict diet and nice and slim , no cushy ha but EMS and having metformin for that, I have told farrier but he doesn't listen, was done by his colleague who didn't scrape his sole and he was fine , this falling on
Deaf ears hence looking for new farrier.

Is there a good trimmer/EP in your area? Farriers seem unable to resist trimming soles, that's one reason why I parted company with mine, and I won't ever need shoes on any of my lot so never looked back.

My EP said not to use iodine, can't remember why unless it is because it is strong enough to damage tissue? I use one of the foot sprays they sell for all kinds of livestock, can't remember what it is called but it is blue :)

Iodine ideally should be mixed with sugar to make something for hardening soles, Personally I would use keratex hoof hardener or NAF Rock Hard or whatever it is called if you don't like the chemical make up of Keratex

Thanks , I have called the vet to attend on Monday just to check him over because he looks so miserable , his feet are not right , looks like he is putting his heel down first and his toes are sticking up, I'm guessing this is bad trimming which may be causing him to be uncomfortable at walking ?

The way you describe him walking sounds very much like he has laminitis.

10 days after or FOR 10 days after?
An animal should never be more sore after a trim. Does he have pulses?
I would pop on some pads to support his feet and treat it as laminitis especially if he is walking on his heels
This is an excellent site about EMS, laminitis etc
