This is kind of the follow up from the "every horse owner should have" thread - is there anything you think they really shouldn't bother with???

I would say -

Masta rugs as every one i've seen has slipped

Most of the cheap supplements out there are all filler & nothing good - you'd be better off with a healthy dose of codliver oil!

Expensive shampoos - try tesco cheapy apple one & coconut conditioner for grey horses - the combo seems to work a treat
(Orvus is worth paying for, tho)

Cheap stirrup leathers - bought some as only ones they had in long length. Drving me mad how unevenly they've stretched in 3 months even with being rotated!

Oh - light coloured horse wear. Don't they know it'll only show up the dirt more easily?

Final one - expensive items that can only stand up to occasional use. I'm not going to spend lots of money on items that look pretty but are saved "just for best" when i could get hardworking things for the same price!

You share too!

Send me your Masta rugs! I like them, especially the slots for the surcingles.

Trying to think what's a waste of money, but I would never buy those lycra hoods with eye holes - too many stories of them twisting and a blinded horse panicking and getting in trouble.

Dubarry boots - just make you look desperate *ducks flak*

Ill have you Masta's some of the best rugs i've ever bough have been Masta's

My big 'pointless' one would be.....

HOOF OIL! burn al lof it.. any hoof dressing that is oil based should be BANNED by the EU.

And on the point of EU.. all these silly fly srays with no citronelle.. useless!

Lou x

Agree with the first two - Masta's are TERRIBLE. I had one and it slipped like hell, leaked and ended up in shreds (on a horse who is very good with rugs).

Have to say the Rambo Duo was a waste of money considering how crazily expensive it was. The neck cover on mine is WAY too neat, and thats on a very slim built TB x! The velcro neck attachments have ripped off several times.

Also agree with the expensivee shampoo thing, Ive also found how good cheapo Tesco ones are!

NAF dark horse shampoo is one of the few thats better than cheapo shampoo, never buy cheap leather headcollars as they always come up in really weird sizing. and if they fit your horse always buy fal as we have ones still lasting after ten years!

I have a Masta lightweight stable rug and it is one of the most useful horsey products I own! Fits beautifully, I use it as a rug liner in winter or on its own when the weather is warmer. It is a lovely colour and looks v. smart. And it was cheap!

Another home offered for Masta's - love em

Definite no no - lycra hoods/bibs for rug rubbing - don't work and just make horse base of mane greasy and horrid - natural fibre ones better

Polypads - always drop down onto wither or slip back not matter how high up and forward I pull the - now cat beds!

Clarendon boots - stitching kicks through stupidly fast and extremely heavy when wet - make legs sweat too much

Totally agree about Mastas and light coloured horse stuff - I mean WHY?! I can even get dark stuff VERY dirty

.

Cheap jods - I have 2 pairs that lasted about 5 months each - yet my pair of £70+ Equitechs are still going strong 14 years on!!

Cheap gloves - for the above reason!

Saddle carriers etc - bloomin pain and get in the way, protective cover works just as well.

Mountain Horse High Riders - or maybe it was just me who had "zip" issues.....three pairs went back then switched to Ariat
grin.gif
, anyone know if the Sportivs are any better because torn between them and the Ariat Bromont......?

Equiboots - bloomin hard work to get one on properly and never convinced it will stay on - Hoofeeze boot is fantastic.

Instead of buying gadgets and supplements on impulse - have an extra lesson with the dosh - your horse will probably benefit more....oh hope that wasn't a bit controversial!!

Masta rugs- slips as soon as i put it on.

Mountain horse boots- long and short have all broken after 4 months (3 pair)

What's with all the Masta hate, I love my Mastas!

One thing I've always regarded as useless are fly rugs (unless for some reason your horse has no mane and tail with which to swat them off themselves!)

Ditto the comments on pale coloured horsey things, except for beige jodhpurs as they make you look classy regardless of what else you are wearing or how you are riding.

It is not worth buying a duplicate of anything you already have 'just in case' and just because it's in the sale - it will either sit in a cupboard forever gathering dust or in the case of rugs just give you twice as much to wash.

Masta rugs are great - My boy has practically lived in his Dynamix heavy weight TO this winter, its fantastic.

Cheap haynets aren't worth the string you tie them too - huge waste of trying to save a few pennies!

I'v also found Masta turnouts a waste of time, slip straight away although have found the stable ones much better, but now stick to Rambo, fantastic!
Cheap headcollars aren't worth the saving as I had one snap by the metal fastenings when my boy bolted off down the field!!! Or cheap leadropes as same happened there before, swear by my John Whitaker one now.
Agree with the cheap haynets.

Not keen on Masta rugs either...the ones I have had have all come up small and torn really easily!
I must say I disagree about dubarry boots - mine are the most comfortable things ever! also mountainhorse, my boots lasted 5 years. And clarendons...mine have lasted years!!

But each to their own eh?

I love my moutain horse high riders! I wear them at work in the yard and polished up for on the carriage, only thing is i slipped off the hub of a waggonette cos i was stood on the steelshank bit of the boot. metal on metal, bad move!

Defo for the cheap gloves! Got through a million pairs of cotton ones but my ariat or leather ones are great.

I will take anyone's slipping Masta's in 6'3" thankyou.

Not worth it - haynets with big holes, hoof oil and the £150 FAL Pro I bought for my Sec D 7 years ago and used 4 times.

Oh no I don't agree with you on this one

My TB goes absoluted ape**** if he gets bitten by flies, the tail cannot swish them all away, especially those bu88ers that they call 'horse flies'..... and then there is his annual 'nettle rash' problem

I had to rush back to remove him from the field, before he got so upset rushing about, and that was even with the existance of a very expensive safe Field Shelter

.... anyway last year I decided to try a fly rug, although I was so worried it would make him too hot, as he barely needs a rug in winter ....

However I was so pleased to find that it WORKED

and it even allowed me to leave him out for the summer

hoof oil - it stops the hoof "breathing" properly..
rubber riding boots, just yuk!!
FAL rugs...don't fit welsh cobs....
those stupid poo-picking scoops, the ones that come with the silly rake, i have never used something so kak-handed in my life, will stick with a shavings fork thanks!

hoof oil doesn't hydrate the hoof, because it is oil it actually prevents the hoof from absorbing water, which it needs to do. terrible stuff. Effol is very good, and other hoof-balm kinds of things, but hoof oil is vile. also guaranteed to get on everything, particularly nice cream breeches...
lilym, i love those poo-picking scoops, use them every day! can't bear shavings forks dropping wet bits over the nice clean dry bed...

Another vote against Masta rugs. - don't fit properly.

Mountain horse boots - they wrecked my feet.

Those rubber tie-up things that are supposed to break in an emergency. Well they don't last very long, and break without an emergency!

Agree with Goat hair face brushes - what are they all about?

Any product to help plaiting, which is a gel! They make your fingers slip. The best one is Quic braid - a high friction liquid in a spray. Absolutely brilliant. I tried the supreme plaiting stuff and the IV horse stuff and they were so slippy.
Just go hairy

Masta rugs - fantastic
poopscoop and rake - fantastic never used one in a stable though.
Waste of money, ditto Hoof Oil, Neatsfoot oil,spray-on leather cleaner, mega-expensive rugs, anything made by Stubben *ducks and runs very quickly*

Any 6', 6'3 or 6'6 mastas that need a new home, please direct to me - mastas are the main rugs that I have. I have one masta rug that is approx 12 years old and still going.

Another vote for hoof oil not being worth it, and most supplements too.

Fly rugs I disagree with - I've had too many sensitive types over the last few years - and fly rugs make them soo much more comfortable in the field.

Lycra anti rub bibs are rubbish rubbish rubbish. They mainly leave more marks on my mare rather than save her shoulders.

mountain horse boots! ive had two pairs the first the heel fell off after 6months and the second were VERY uncomfortable and all the leather went skanky
im an ariat convert XD
xx
