That they do actually like us. I know that sounds daft, but I always thought they were a bit like cats, happy to live with anyone provided their (extensive!) needs are met.
I always thought that Bo was pretty indifferent to me and would happily disappear with someone else without so much as a backwards glance if they gave him a polo. However, Mr SC had to take over for a week recently after I injured myself. After a week I hobbled out to the stables, and oh my goodness, he was absolutely delighted to see me! He was snuggling up to me, snuffling my hair, and demanded numerous muzzle kisses. I realised that I am very much his human and he does notice when I'm not around.
