Puppy stays in the kitchen when we go out, and has so far been excellent, only chewing his (numerous) chew toys. However there is one low shelf which looks like it could become a tasty snack when he starts teething. Can anyone recommend anything to paint or spray on it as a preventative measure?

hee hee I've tried mustard, tobasco and chilli on his wicker basket and he just licks them off! And he eats bits of onions which get dropped while I'm cooking if he gets the chance (I know they're supposed to be poisonous). A puppy with wierd taste I think.

The "bitter apple" spray - same as available to stop horses chewing wood. You can get it at a pet store or use the horse product. It's supposed to be fine on painted surfaces, fabric etc and so far that's been my experience but you might want to test a small portion first.

Be aware though it's VERY unpleasant and hard to wash off so try not to get it on your hands or anything you will be handling regularly. I know some people are very sensitive to it so maybe wear gloves and try not to inhale it while you're spraying but it doesn't smell unpleasant when it's dry.
