Things you just cant bring yourself to throw away!

So after reading the old timers thread I got to thinking i have so much stuff i dont use but wont bin! Like the NZ i used as a makeshift tarpaulin. I know i have jute rugs lurking somewhere and probably some more canvas rugs. They are kept as spares but i have ,more spares than i need.

A few weeks ago i binned some of those old string gloves with no grip and i really should bin some old stylo riding boots that dont fit. I think i also have some string vest sweat rugs too!

My first pony's shoe, headcollar, numnah and browband.
My rosettes going back about 25 years.
Loads of tack.

I have thrown out some old saddles but i cut them apart before i took them to the tip to make sure no-one tried to put them on a horse!
 
Cant believe your going to throw away string vest sweat rugs - I love those under my fleeces when the nags are hot and these days I just cant find anywhere to buy them - I have to rummage on ebay for them.

Ive got my first horses, headcollar, lock of mane, first shoe and a couple of other bits that i'd never part with.

Also got the stable name plaques of all my past neds (only 3 of them).
 
I actually threw out some t-shirts and fleeces today, that I had printed on when I use to do horse grooming.
I did have to think about it though, but thought, I wouldn't do it again, and if I did, I would just wear normally riding wear anyway!
I have loads of socks and other fleeces that have probably seen better days, but you never know when they may come in handy...!!
 
a t shirt with (well I can't see it anymore!) "Scotland the Brave" on it. Was Dads good top, then his cleaning the cellar top, then became my yard top and is now a pj top. Must be 20 years old
My last horses headcollar, passport, rug, lock of tail hair, name plate and shoe. Shoe is mounted on a plaque, name plate lives on my book shelf, and rug has had straps removed and is now a blanket.
 
I have loads of stuff that i should throw out, but i know if i do, i will need it in a few weeks time, its true it always happens to me .

We still have saddles which fitted every horse we have ever had, right back to the first horse which was bought 35 yrs ago.

BUT just as I was thinking of maybe contacting Saddles Direct (for some of the newer ones) I found that my Clydesdale's SC saddle fits the ID better than the one she brought with her and as the first Clyde's saddle fitted the 2nd one perfectly I have re-thunk.

They are all staying, you never know when one might come in useful.

We never throw anything away! This has turned out to be very useful, the rugs that fitted the Clyde don't fit any of the current mares, BUT saved a friends rug wrecker from having to shiver when he had wrecked the 4th one this winter while fully clipped (we still have one in reserve for her) Also another friend is going to try the old cobs extra wide saddle on her lad, as her newish synthetic has worn out! The old stuff will outlast me.

NZ - currently being used as a curtain over the hen's entrance to their stall in the barn to keep them warm at night .
jute rug in the tack room ' just in case' one of the cats wants to use it as a bed.
My 32 year old rug my Arab ( now departed ) used to wear as a baby . Kept for sentimental reasons .
I have those big plastic storage boxes and every so often have a look in them ................ rugs , numnahs , boots - but I can't seem to throw anything away !
I have Exmoors now & don't use rugs ............
 
I used to give everything away, but now I keep it all - though hapy to lend out stuff

A pair of hind shoes which were put on my mare at a show when she pulled hers off in the lorry..they were from a farrier who shoes some of the top Quarter Horses in the country and he refused to put her old (admittedly twisted) ones back on.
They remind me of how easy it is for things to go wrong on the way to a show, and to be grateful just to get there in one piece to enjoy it

They're also beautifully made shoes...we referred to them as her 'Jimmy Choos' when they were on!
A Horseware headcollar that doesn't actually fit her cos she won it at a show....
Oh and about a million rugs, some of which she has outgrown. I do try and have a clearout sometimes...
 
Horses hair which I have kept to remind me of them as years have gone by. Especially those that have been PTS. Have to keep a bit of them. Also the foals first headcollars, they have to stay so I can say to the big strapping buggers, you were once that little you could wear these and look at you now, he he.
 
25 year old Witney wool rug and quarter sheet, and my myler LS combo were the ONLY things that came with me from the UK. It really hurt but I sold, threw or gave away, 25 years worth of accumulated horse related paraphenalia before I moved, couldn't afford another shipping container to accomodate it all.

It is very inconvenient not to have my box of spare straps, buckles, clips and assorted metal wear at times (hacked off dead rugs and halters) amazingly, I sold them on eBay!
 
rather gruesome but I have kept my old horse's tooth that was extracted as it was growing sideways into her cheek. The top of the tooth instead of being a flat grinding surface is at an angle of 45 degrees! It is like something out of a text book.
 
Never throw anything away, still have my old girls made to measure saddle even though she has been retired for several years now. Quite convinced if I sell it something will happen to her

Hey LeneHorse - I've kept some of my horses' teeth too. My 29 year old has hardly any upper molars. I kept two of them when they had to be extracted because they were so loose. I've also got a couple of tooth caps from my boys, who I've had since they were babies.

On the clothes and equipment side of things - I've still got my mothers old winged heavy twill jodphurs and her green Hampton Court Horse Rangers shirt from when she used to ride with the Horse Rangers in the 1950s.
 
I have kept my foals chestnuts, they are tiny! His wolf teeth too,( hes 4 now) I also keep yrs worth of Horse and Hounds, all my rugs I have ever bought if they fit or not. I'm supprised the loft hasn't fell down with all the stuff up there! I keep broken headcollars, just incase I need them??? Clips off broken leadropes..... I better not go on!!

A horse shoe from my first horse that Dad has laquered with silver paint and set on a shield and engraved with his name. Rommy's name tag from his bridle that is attached to my car key ring. My dead horses tails that are plaited neatly by thoughtful caring people. Rugs that have been handed down through the generations of horses that I have owned that are still serviceable although a bit old fashioned. The body brush that still smells of my horse all these years later and was used to brush him the day before he was pts. Lots of odds and sods like odd boots, brushes, and half used pots of saddle soap that you always keep for 'another day' but never get to use!!!
