So heres mine:
Horsey:
1) i learnt how to drive a lorry!!
2) just how hard it was to lose a horse :(
3) dressage can be fun!
4) not to leave anything within reach of my 5 yr old! Learnt that the hard way!!!!
5) its very rewarding teaching a youngster :)
6) doesnt matter if you follow everything by the book it can still go all wrong!
7) the patience needed when having yet another horse off with injury!
8) the entire inside structure of the horses forelimb!!

Non horsey:
1) dont sleep in your car in jan its cold!!
2) dont forget your passport and only remember when you arrive at heathrow!
3) how to scuba dive!
4) who i can/cant count on... Learnt the hard way!!

So comon HHO what have you learnt in the past year?? :)

Horsey: there are way worse outcomes for a horse than to be PTS.

Non-horsey:
stuff happens. It is hard at the time, but it will pass.
Mindfulness - try it sometime

Horsey:
The only saddle that will fit OH new horse just happens to be her favourite very expensive make.
Daughter is convinced she can whoop dads butt in SJ comp despite dad also being her instructor.
Horses are impossible to walk away from.

Non horsey:
The north sea is not the nicest place to be in a force 8 gale when in a 32 foot yacht.

Things can change at the blink of an eye with horses. So appreciate every minute rather than every day.
That change is a good thing :)

Horsey:

It is absolutely wonderful to own a horse again (its been 10 years!)
I have sooo much to learn in 2014!

Non horsey:

There's no place like home. I spent 5 years living abroad and now i'm back in the UK, i'm definitely in no rush to leave!

Horsey: That I'm not as good as I thought I was - but equally not as bad as I THEN thought I was.
Just because I have a lot of experience with young horses, does not mean I can retrain an ex-racer.
How to deal with a very sharp horse!
How to not always be in control.
How to stay one step ahead of a clever horse.
A LOT about feeding.
How to fake being confident.

Non-horsy: How to run my own business!
That being happy in your work is more important than earning a lot.
That I'm actually very happy being single, certainly at the moment.
That the people I knew at school have also grown up, and therefore aren't actually as intimidating as I thought.
That I am really, really lucky to have what I have.

This is a good question which has made me think quite hard ...

Horsey stuff ..

The more I ride, the less I know
A good pony is equal to a good horse but cheaper to keep
You don't need 20 rugs for one horse

Non horsey stuff...

Money isn't everything
How to use photoshop
Sodoku fries your brain
You really are as old as you feel

... I'm sure there must be more, but that will do for starters.

Horsey
Oh dear... I'm going to whisper this....... 'Yolo'....... So being brave, bold and confident really makes good things happen!
Trust your self the most....especially your gut, normally it is right!
No matter what situation you are in always learn and gain something from it!
I couldn't live without my horses and that I have so much to thank them for!

Generally
Don't stay somewhere that is making you ill; either physically, mentally or emotionally.Always reach for a better place as it is out there!
Some friends just aren't friends...they are users
How to drive a car
Life changes, but you can shape those changes and go in a direction that makes you happy.

Horsey:

Hold tighter when jumping the stag like mare..
Patience is the key to success
If you don't try, then you'll never know
Don't go into a flooded outdoor school with mudruckers with holes and then realise the radiators aren't working in accommodation..

non horsey:

Life is a bitch...
I can get through depression without anyone next to my side
I have become very claustrophobic
I Nearly hit a child with a baguette in Tesco few weeks ago - Managed to resist temptation of hitting very annoying child ;)

Horsey:

Horses can actually TEACH their riders how they would like to be ridden :) My loan mare has, bless her.

Trust your gut instinct; and if the "energy isn't right" either between horses-to-horses; or horses-to-humans (and vice versa), stand back and try to see the overall picture. i.e. stand back and look at the wood as a whole, not just one tree.

If you want the results you've always had, keep doing the thing you've always done (fave Michael Peace quote:) - and oh so very true).

If buying a saddle (or any other major horsey piece of kit for that matter): pay by credit card, coz that way you'll have some degree of consumer protection. If they won't accept credit card then walk away.

Non-horsey:

If the car suddenly starts costing money, get rid, get rid, get rid!

The annoying, twittery old woman who's holding up the queue in Tesco's is probably desperately lonely and this is her only social outing all week, and the smile you get for helping her with her shopping is oh so worth the effort.

Don't ever, repeat ever, get friendship and business muddled up. Especially so-called "friends" who you put over £4000-worth of business to; and then due to their sheer greed and pig-headedness, a simple polite phone call was/is too much trouble. If they're on here, they'lll recognise themselves! :(

If you're too busy to make time for genuine friends who've been there for you when you need it, you're too flippin busy. Period.

Horsey:
Selling horses is a complete pain in the bum
It is worth an 20 hour round trip and breaking down 6 times for your dream horse
Dressage can be enjoyable (in small doses)
How to clip!
To play Polo (soooo fun)

Non-horsey:
How to navigate airports on my own
How to cope with my 7 messy flatmates

Horsey

Do something that once scared you, it will break down the walls and help you move forward.
Listen to your gut
My horse is more talented than i give her credit for
I need to be tougher with said horse because she takes the piss!

Non Horsey
People arent always who you think they are
I can do more than work with horses!

Horsey
He is capable but needs to be properly prepared as lacks confidence in himself.
I need to ask the right questions before he can answer them.
If there is any mud, it will end up on me.
Both
Seize the day, nothing is sadder than what if.

Non horsey
I always had a touch of road rage but after watching the drivers in Vietnam who weave in and out with the most chaotic system with out any annoyance, I realised it doesn't achieve anything and tolerance is easier and makes life flow smoother.
And a lesson from MiJodsR2blinkin tight above that I will try and remember

Horsey: that I can't be without horses in my life. It's part of who I am.
(Probably) that sharing isn't enough and I need to find a way to be able to afford my own

Leading to

Everything that grey legs said about horses. I'm gonna look for a good pony instead of a great horse.
As I am not Charlotte du jardin and I don't need a big warm blood Olympic hold medalist horse (although who wouldn't want Valegro!!)

Non-horsey:
To stop blaming my parents and their messy break up for everything that goes wrong in my life and to man up and take some responsibility for my own happiness.

That nothing much has gone wrong in my life, and its actually pretty great :)

Horse -

The VERY basics...... Having always said 'you'll never get me on a horse', to my girlfriend, curiosity(?) got the better of me! There does exist a picture of me sat on a heavyweight cob, in possibly the worlds tattiest jacket. I look at it now and laugh - little did I know that 5 minute plod round the paddock would spiral into weekly lessons and a hobby I thoroughly enjoy......

Echoing the above, the surprise(?) you get off some people when a mid twenties male expresses an intrest in riding horses not motorobikes....

Despite the fact there are many, many tack shops round here - NONE stock anything for male riders (eg jodphurs) as 'most men don't bother with proper gear', 'men don't normally care - just wear jeans instead' or even 'there's no such thing as MENS jodphurs'...... Thank goodness for the internet..

There ARE good, caring, genuine people out there that are willing to explain/help/give time to help a novice with gems of wisdom gaining from a lifetimes experience of all things 'horse'....

Non horse -

The business I started 3 years ago HAS, CAN and WILL succeed despite those that said and still do, that it wouldn't...

NEVER wonder what if - just do it....

Oh and there ARE people out there you can rely on when things don't go quite right...

Horsey - that you know your horse better than anyone and therefore need you to fight tooth and nail to get the healthcare they deserve cos no one else will do it and if you are not happy with vet suggestions.....make your own. They are people not gods!

Non horsey - that Greece is beautiful and very cheap! Going back this year!

Horsey -
how to cope with a lame horse
how to cope with a horse who's run away from home
how to cope with being alone, with no other liveries or YO to help (Which is why you guys are SO awesome)
that riding isn't the be-all and end-all of having horses

Non horsey
I doubt I'll ever be happy in a relationship
and I'm fine with that!
losing your job is terrifying!
finding a new one is hard
but not impossible!!

Horsey:
-Rio is a lot better than I give him credit for and that I should be proud of the work I have done with him, even if we don't get to a high level, he is my best friend and I love him far too much for his own good ;)
-Winning our first trophy and prize money feels fantastic and has given me more incentive to keep trying.

Non horsey:
-Not to be afraid so much.
-Who my real friends are.
-Proving people wrong feels fantastic.
-Don't take anything or anyone for granted, you never know when you will see them for the last time :(
-Be wary of whom you trust and believe, they may jut be using you for what you have worked hard to achieve, to achieve their own greatness at your expense.

How to listen to what your horse is telling you and not just think they are being difficult!
That barefoot is the way forward.
That life is hard and you have to count your blessings
That you only have very few true friends
That things are not always what they seem on the surface
I do know what I am talking about quite a lot of the time and I should not keep doubting myself.

I still have not learnt:
How to lose weight
How to say no to that last drink!
Keep fit
How to properly relax

That you can't trust anyone!
Selling horses is painful and stressful....even after their sold!
How rewarding breaking and bringing on a youngster is.
That life goes on after horses (but so does the weight)
To keep on going when things get tough.

- Don't be stubborn and think you know it all as it will end in tears
- Give 110% in everything you do because the rewards are immense.
- Make mistakes, because you definitely do learn from them!

:-)
