Well, im 16 and after 11 years of riding... I guess i cant really compare to alot of people on here. But here goes.

I suppose for me... its got to be the smell of fresh hay on a cold winters night when youve settled all the horses in for the night.

Or on a fresh frosty morning when you warm your hands under a rung and snuggle into their necks... that HORSE smell!

And in the summer, one of my most treasured memories.. me and my 2 older sisters galloping up the hills, over the stone wall and into the wood and playing hide and seek/tig for hours on end.

Or just bathing the ponies (usually with herbal essences!) outside the back door!

I have had a wonderful horsey childhood thus far.

string girths (and I'm talking what only 7 years ago)
Those chin cups on riding hats
stylo rubber riding boots
H&P magazine before it was redesigned

Green hunter wellies being trendy (they also only came in green). X-country colours were always quartered and only came in blue, red, green or yellow (definitely no pink or purple).

Like weezy those awful jute rugs and blankets you stole of your bed to put underneath them. And why did every single rug in the world not fit around the neck?

Half panel saddles and serge panels as well. No nummahs, string girths. Westrop over reach boots and white rubber reins

**coughs**

Riding bareback through fields, polo breath on horse, soggy sandwiches, pony club camp, harry hall johds, rubber riding boots (classy) Johdpur clips (you always lost one didnt you) my pony club tie, badge, and folding hoofpick, bbq with the smell of accompnying muck heap, wooden trailers, pony nuts, daisy reigns woof club boots, petal flippy flappy over reach boots,

I cant wait to have kids to inflict all of that on them - I am going to be such a pony club mother. I had the best horsey childhood.

Oh god I hated string girths...and trying to wash them in bucket full of Daz before pony club camp!! Oh and oxtail soup & bread rolls for lunch at pony club rallies...

Oh and everyone towed a trailer with a car!!! (ours was a datsun sunny)

Cottage Craft was the market leader in everything!!!

Jute rugs and proper NZ rugs.

Absolutely NO mixes available.

Ditto the above and I had the candy stripe Puffa and thought it was fab LOL.

I also remember helping my friend at Crookham (think it is now Tweseldown?) and I said to her groom "that man over there looks like Mark Todd and that lady looks like Ginny Leng". She replied "it is!" As I was quite young at the time I only thought they competed at the big events like Badminton!!!

ETA Also remember the pony having alternate green and white bandages whilst competing cross country and thinking it looked cool!!

Cold shoeing for my first pony.

Going to pony club camp and doing the jumping lane with no tack and hands on head - instructors having no fear of being sued.

Falling off and being expected to fall off and no-one batting an eye lid and reaching for the phone to call a lawyer.

Feeding Mainring and horses getting bran mashes.

Barebacking up the road in flipflops and shorts...then a sneaky gallop round the paddock (cringes)
Riding in the trailor with the ponies when they had to travel each day from the riding school to their winter turn out.

I was never fortunate to have my own but used to spend holidays and weekends at the local riding stables. I remember having a particular attachment to a lovely cob named Queenie and I used to do everything for this horse....then I went away on holiday for a week and when I came back this other girl had taken her over...I was devastated. Could still slap her face if I saw her now...lol

Jute rugs and those huge canvas turnout ones- almost like wax jackets.

Oh and wax jackets LOL. When navy was the most trendy colour for jods.

Numnahs, headcollars etc would only come in black, blue, red or white (green or bugundy if you was really lucky).

Personally, spending all day at the stables in the summer, the excitement of preparing for a show and going to shows. My mum's methods of keeping me clean before condition and turnout classes LOL.

Bucket elimination at the local show.
Bran mash after a long ride - of 2hr!!!

Riding down to the end of the field and being bolted back with!
Green canvas rugs with those awful rollers to keep them upright.

2 bus journeys to ride my loan pony, taking my collie dog, and having races across the field with them . He always won because he used to dive in front of us!

Being bolted with up the middle of the village High Street on a sunny Bank Holiday when there was a tank coming the other way, and all the kids hanging out of their car windows and waving at me as I shot past yelping!

velvet browbands! and plastic browbands! those nylon woven reins, most horses had proper leather girths, masta canvas turnouts, proper whitney blankets under rollers! rubber chin cups, bran mashes and all horses on straights. Oh! and most things were navy with red edges and polywarmas were brandless and very modern.

Jute rugs, Canvas NZ rugs (The smell of both still haunt me, heheheheee)!!

String girths and Felt pad Saddles on pony's. (I haven't seen one of these for years)!!

Building jumps out of any old rubbish and jumping them about twenty zillion times.

Cantering on verges.

Blocking up Bridleways by building more jumps.

Saddle fitter? What's a saddle fitter??

Stirrups & bits that were made of metal that had to be polished like hell to get a shine. (No easy life stainless steel)

Browbands that were covered in plastic, made to look like the sharks tooth effect that you would normally see done in Velvet. (Sorry don't know proper name).

Webbing girths that you had to paint with shoe whitener to whiten for shows.

I remember when the padded Cottage craft girth first came out. Wow!! In red too!!

Rubber reins and rubber components only came in Orange.

Only Hunting horses were clipped.

Jods seem to only come in horrible sweaty nylon material, however they did last forever!!

Bareback horse riding, galloping, jumping and giving backies. (my pooooorrrr ponies)!!

Phew, I can't think of much more right now

Ladies riding in headscarves and men in tweed caps. Only kids having to wear riding hats.
Saddle tramp corduroy jophurs with huge foam padding on bum and legs.
Two tone browbands made from strips of plastic (yuck) couldn't afford a velvet one.
My brother taking his first rides in a basket saddle. A sort of wicker seat with sides fixed to a saddle.

horses wearing jute rugs with normal blankets underneath that had to be folded back over the shoulders and secured with a surcingle.
height of fashion

to wear leg warmers when riding - Ok I admit it I was an eighties girl
smirk.gif

quilted jackets with velvet collars
oh and jumping 3'6" courses and not even thinking about it!

Oh and once getting stuck on a xcountry course on my 13 2 barrel of a pony called Judy who decided the grass on the other side of a log we were allegedly jumping was much more enticing than actually jumping - so front legs on one side, hind legs on the other, head down to graze & 7yo me flapping desperately to try & get her to stop embarassing me (made even worse by the fact that my Dad was the DC!!)

Hmmm....seem to remember my mates grandad had a bit of wavin pipe he used to carry everywhere to 'encourage' ponios over fences - he started waving it at her hind end and I screamed at him not hit hit my precious pony (who was in fact a saint to put up with me - I was a crap pilot!)

I eventually got off very red faced and led her over it!!!

Jute rugs, heavy canvas new zealands, blankets and rollers, string girths, boiled barley, chinstrapless hats, sweat rugs with the big holes in, nickel bits and stirrups, wisps.

Gosh, that takes me back a few years!
