ok was very peeed off yesterday but now seeing the sunny side and just wondered if anybody else has been the recipient of odd comments from a judge. It started on saturday at a small local show that i decide i am never doing again the following year but end up doing it because it is local (5 mins hack away) (but dont get me started on that rant) plus its the only one i do now as bill is not exactly fond of poncing round in circles well scuffling is more his way of going without hounds in front of him and some sleet and snow to complete the picture. Billy is a 19 yr old solid staid dependably awkward black going somewhat grey dales gelding who if need be would happily carry an old ewe down a hillside in front of the saddle and as a younger animal did reasonably well in the odd mountain and moorland class. so i find my self white rope halter in hand in front of the judge in an in hand mountain and moorland class the first judges statement did not increase my confidence " He's a bit too hairy isn't he?"
it was alittle like being on mock the week .......
i have to admit i didnt really know what to say in retrospect i should have replied if you think he's hairy you should see my legs..... :)

At which point you also then think - does she even have half an inkling as to what breed he is.

I had one the other week who said - lovely pony, great that he is still going out doing the ridden job and thoroughly enjoying it, he is the only one in this ring who Does something other than in-hand, he is just a bit old for my liking.

Flint is 22yo, looks cracking, has won said class for the last 7 years on the trot and this time we had a freshly gelded 4yo beast and a 6yo comapanion to compete against... Not overly amused to say the least! It's a good job Flint showed the judge up in the Supreme when she was suprised to see him there - he was reserve ridden champion, he had every right to be there :D :D :D She looked even more shocked when she discovered that the pony the 3 of them had unanimously voted supreme was 19yo! She had a real agest issue - and she was certainly no spring chicken herself!

I will save that one up for an appropriate moment!

just another query but everybody was also asking me if he has cushings which i'm fairly sure he hasnt yes his coat does resemble a part bred yak but apart from that that is his only thing (his coat has always been like this and i have known him since he was 7 )he has had 2 very mild bouts of lami in the last two years one of which i beleive was caused by the overzealous application of fert which we didnt know had been spread til 2 days later and the over one was when i was 8 1/2 months pregnant and he was about as big as a yak and hadnt been riddden for a month or two. Refering to another thread he does suffer ocd when it comes to feed buckets he definately can't leave them dirty! any thoughts anyone?

There is a campaign at the moment offering free cushings tests for horses with the right sort of history. I think the details are in this week's or last week's H&H.

But some natives do just look hairy! helps them slide over the hunt fences!

my daughter at her first show got told by the judge she would preferred to have seen the pony (sec A) plaited, that too was a mountain and moorland class, placed first was show cob!

I though the whole point of M&Ms was that they were gloriously hairy. You don't do well up on the moors in winter without a coat like a yak. Stupid judge.

The only grey (and the only lead rein) in a best turned out class.

'He (was a she but hey ho) is very very white'.... me thinking :D hard work paid off, hope for a rossie.... get placed 7th out of 7....

''too white to look at cos I don't have my sun glasses'':eek:

We did get a special BUT!

I must say when reading your post I did wonder whether that was what the judge suspected, given his age. Obviously, Dales should have lots of feather and full manes and tails, but in the summer you wouldn't expect the rest of their coat to be overtly woolly (although at the end of the summer many ponies are being to grow their winter coat). So perhaps that was what the judge was commenting on?

Might be worth having him tested given the laminitis history and his age.

I got asked by the judge as I was leaving the dressage arena a few weeks ago

"is he really big or are you just really small?"

I replied that I am normal sized and he is just an elephant!

Last year, we entered Donovan into M&M 4 years and older. We came 5th out of 5, the reason given was that he was too young. He was 5 at the time!

The only odd comment I remember was at an annual RC show - Id just entered the ring on my pure bred Welsh D who had a decent showing record behind him with many wins in ridden M&M and M&M WHP classes. The steward was sent over by the judge to ask me "are you in the wrong class? This is M&M?", I said no this is the correct class and she said "but isn't he a friesian?". NO HE ISN'T! Yes, he is black/dark bay but thats about the only resemblence! I knew that was a bad start... in the end she actually placed us last BEHIND even some plaited half breed ponies who could barely canter (and mine had done a foot perfect show). Very odd, but we tootled off to win the M&M WHP class aftewards instead! Bit worrying when the judge cant even recognise a breed though!
