Things you've done that HHO members might not like....

Oh, just remembered another - bet some others do it, particularly when hunting!

Riding back home with your legs over the front of the saddle! So comfy!

[/ QUOTE ]

Oh yes

When you dismount do you put your leg over the horses back or neck - I always go neck

over the neck it's easier!

feed treats by hand including sweets and mints
Change feeds without "introducing" it first
have no tack other than saddle and bridle with a snaffle
he never wears boots or stable rugs
have left my boy out in the snow with no rug as he is wooly enough on his own.
regularly trot on roads and canter in the same spots on hacks
never take/use a stick
baby my horse and let him in my personal space
refer to his anatomy in human terms and call his rugs Pj's

The list probably goes on..

OK, so I've done most of what has been mentioned.

Swapped stirrups and reins with the person riding along side - then decided that cantering would be a GREAT idea
ooo.gif

Taken reins completely over horses head and handed them to person riding along side
Pulled one stirrup over to the otherside of saddle to ride side saddle
Never wear a hat for ground work - but always gloves - now anyway
Have ridden on bute
Have and will administer bute/AB's without consulting vet
Will administer IV to own horses and have IM'd others (on studs - though wouldn't now due to legalities)
Will/have taken bloods and drop off at vets
Have no truck with bad mannered horses
Breathing seems to be a problem to some people, so I'd better include that too
I will bring B in, in the rain - all she does is stand there shivering - what IS the point in leaving her?
I will shoe horses out of work
I have seriously considered barefoot trimming as the way forwards
I will layer rugs - I know my horses!
I have completely clipped out horses that are in light work - makes life SO much easier!

Ooo this is great makes me feel normal.

Ok:

I ride in a dutch gag with roundings.
I have been known to throw a headcollar at a piss taking horse in the filed on more than one occasion.
I feed treats by hand, only to Josie though.
Baby D isn't fed any foalie food, only alfa a and vits, he's still a porker.
I carry a whip and will use it.
I dont lunge with a hat.
I STILL get nervous when going on a hack!

- Always used to canter my horse in from the field in a headcollar with no hat - it was too far to walk!
- If we couldn't catch my sisters pony I used to round it up on my horse, again with headcollar and no hat
- Have thrown a headcollar at my horse when I couldn't catch her
- Ride in trainers & wellies
- Own a a very chavvy saddlecloth - velvet with gold braid and mine and my horse's name written on it in gold script!
- Also own white fluffy tendon boots and white overreach boots
- Used to jump my old pony bareback in a headcollar
- Have whacked my horse between the ears when she reared - she had already gone over backwards with me & I didn't want her to do it again
- Never wear a hat when lunging or use a lunge whip
- Have jumped and galloped horses when they are not fit enough
- Feed polos by hand - whats wrong with that?
- Trot on the roads - not sure whats wrong with that either
- Have attached reins to running martingale rings through bit rings - I thought it was a bad idea too but my SJ instructor told me to do it!

I feel really bad now.....

Never wear a hat when I school
Never wear a hat when I lunge
Sometimes don't ride - just because I don't want to
Own several whips and will discipline my horse if necessary
Horse IS unshod but only because she has good feet and is trimmed by 'normal' farrier
Can't abide Parelli
Can't abide Monty Roberts
Can't abide 'Classical' instructors - WTF if you ride correctly then you ride classical - simple as - no damn mystery about it
confused.gif

Pretty much everything on this & the previous six pages, except:-
Don't text whilst riding - I'm crap at texting at the best of times. Don't smoke whilst riding (well not since I gave up!)
Don't own any JW / Joules / Toggi or Musto kit - can't afford it, although I do have a lovely Shires pretend lambswool numnah.
Haven't fed unsoaked beat.

i ride in a 3 ring gag with one rein, also a mexican grackle noseband.
never had my horses back check
havent had my saddle checked in almost 2 years
my saddle is 20 years old[at the very least]
laugh.gif

i talk on my phone whilst riding[know to do it while trotting bareback&whilst out hacking :O]
spray my horse while she spins round and cause flying sparks
i almost never clean tack.....

Its good to see that not everyone is completely virtuous!

Ok mine:

- Sometimes don't ride, just because I don't feel like it. I spend time grooming and fussing over her instead
- I never use a cavesson to lunge
- I never get a "back man" out. If I feel my horse as a back injury I will get my vet, then if needed would use a qualified physio upon vets advice
- I don't have every rug under the sun, I have cheapy stable rugs and a couple of decent turnouts and thats it, I layer up when needed
- I use haynets
- I don't believ in specialist farriers. All farriers should be capable of shoeing and trimming the hoof of any horse even if it requires special treatment
- I hate pulled tails
- I smack my horse with a whip if she is naughty when ridden
- I am very strict with her whilst on the ground and will not tolerate any bad manners - she does not get given an inch!
- I ride in a waterford and also in a dutch gag with one rein (although only for very exciting hacks and xc)
- I put rugs on for my own convenience (i.e. to keep her clean or dry)
- I have lost my temper with her once and smacked her - however I dislocated my thumb in the process so then went and sat down away from her for 10min till I calmed down!
- I have made Spring wear a pink rug

Ok....

* Have twitched a horse just because it wouldnt stand sill whilst was plaiting it, was in a hurry and it was just doing it to be obnoxious

*Chased same horse around stable with shavings fork after it booted me whilst mucking out

*Used a broom to get a cast horse up as he wouldnt let us anywhere near him, and lay there like a lemon.

* Loaded a horse with a chifney, cant tolerate horses that run backwards just because they can

* Only checked my horses once a day when they were living out in the summer as KNEW they had enough water/werent being fed.

* Rug my horses up to the eyeballs because he feels the cold.

*Schooled old pony in headcollar, and taught said pony flying changes in headcollar as he had had teeth pulled.

*Fuly clip my horse in winter whether he needs it or not.

* Taken my 4yr old round a one day event and expected him to behave like a horse.

*Taken same 4yr old hunting.

* Brought a coloured youngster, from ireland, without expert guidance, was the ONLY horse went to see, and had pretty much already decided was having him before I met him. Best decision ever made.

* Never use schooling aids.

* Use pessoa when cant be a***d to ride, but only for short periods.

Could go on......

I don't think anyone on here is. Where are the perfect people?

Oh, my list? Most of the above. Except the JW numnah's and diamante browbands. If I had a pretty horse I would have a diamante browband.

Cheers

Ok!

* My horses live out 24/7 out of ease!

* I rug up early to put off clipping!

* I never wear a hat unless i am on board a horse.

* i dont wear gloves to lead, but do to lunge and ride.

* I use 2 whips when schooling (dont see that as a problem).

* I wont take any [****] from my horse.

* At the moment all my horse does is go in the school as i have a fear or hacking on the road (other road users).

* I have lunged (and would do again) my daughter with a pessoa and, did i ever get slated by it?!
grin.gif

* I have used a harrbridge, in fact i think its quite a useful gadget. the only one i use. actually, i guess a pessoa is!
blush.gif
But, I never use draw reins.

* I forget to write down worming dates and then have to guess.
blush.gif

Cant think of anything else at the mo.

Okay...

I HAVE ridden in a pelham with roundings.

I HAVE used a 3 ring gag on the bottom ring, without a curb strap.

I DO wear spurs, carry a whip which I use if necessary, and make my horse jump large fences.

I do clip my horse because it makes MY life easier when it comes to grooming him.

I have neglected to pick my horses feet out when i've been running late.

I do make my horse wear a fly fringe *because I think it looks good*
shocked.gif

I have fitted saddles myself, without consulting a *master saddler*.

I DO make my horses wear shoes.

I DO use draw reins if I think it helps my horse.

I DO look at myself in the mirror when riding
shocked.gif

I HAVE travelled my horses without boots or bandages.

I NEVER wear a hat to lunge or lead my horse.

I HAVE ridden without a hat...although very rarely.

I DON'T believe in *the back man*.

I DO believe I do the very best for my horses

reading all of this lot...we are all the same ...

i have done many thigngs in the past...
pulled rearing horse over backwards on a few occassions
got off before i hit the deck (today!)
changed feeds overnight
give the big horses a WHOLE bale of hay which lasts for 2 nights
hate pelhams...am riding in one...
use a large peice of elastic to lunge in

we have a saying here......

PMSL....
- have twitched, smacked and booted a badly behaved horse (in fact turned a power hose on him full blast in a rage when the bugger wouldn't stand)
- have bought a green horse as a green rider
- used a whip and spurs and always ride in a running martingale
- have my boy on full schooling livery (even though can't afford the mortgage this month...)
- never wear hat lunging and rarely wear gloves
- don't own any boots travelling or otherwise...

You know, many of these broken rules, I can understand - cantering on verges, etc etc.

There is an assumption here I cannot understand.

To have a well behaved horse you must hurt it - simply not true.

I do not ride professionally - I ride for pleasure. It would be no pleasure to me if it was not also a pleasure to my horse.

If a horse threatens a dominant horse in the field, the dominant horse WILL retaliate - FACT, that is how the dominant horse stays the dominant horse. If my horse booted me I would boot her/him back (not that ANY of my horses has ever tried to boot me), that is the way of horses, they simply do not understand 'please don't do that darling' - it is a world away from beating or hurting!

My naughty ones are;
used to smoke on the yard,
didn't always wear a hat [do now]
own every magical potion on the market
get the vet out if my horse looks at me wrong
when he gets strong going up to the field, i let him take himself up [i'm not ending up face down in the mud]
Have taught him to stand face in, in the corner when he gets bolshy in his stable
AND the worst one i care to admit to is:
When the going gets tough i bale out!!

My first reaction was to think "Nothing" because I honestly feel that anything I do is for the best of my horse. HOWEVER, having read many (not all though) of the posts, I freely admit to doing lots and lots of them and honestly not giving a monkey's if anyone disapproves
smile.gif

Ooooh my number one feel-guilty-for thing I ever did to my horse (and it has stiff competition) was on a freeeezing winter day when trying to remove his HW New Zealand that weighs a ton......because I was talking on the phone, I totally forgot i hadn't undone the leg straps, so whipped it off his back, and practically pulled his legs out from under him.
May not have been so bad if he was a relatively calm horse anyway, but he's a little scared of rugs and hates being tied up, so he broke the tie up ring, reared a lot, ran backwards, spun around and nearly knocked himself over in a panic.

All the while I just sort of stood there apologising and keeping out of the way of flying hooves......

Also I ride bareback in from the field with a headcollar, on a very flighty TB type thing - but my god it feels good. First time I did it I was amazed at how responsive he was. Now regularly hack round the farm like it, no gloves or hat......

None of my horses have ever kicked, threateded to kick, or bitten or threatened to bite me either. Come to that, none of mine barge, push, pull, or present the slightest difficulty in hand or under saddle. I'm not saying none of them will perhaps see something they dislike out riding - J has a terror of sandcastles which is actually rather funny, the little one once got a real fright with a tent behind a hedge - but none of them are difficult. And, amazingly, it is quite possible to train them in obedience through methods which don't require pain. I am frankly astonished that so many here don't seem to know that, and feel that the choice is between having disrespectful horses, and hurting them. It is not.
